I think Bernstein is right, Jones was a great athlete but wasn't a great technical fighter.

^ He's dead on. If I were a boxing teacher, I'd use Roy as the prime example on why you should learn and master the fundamentals first before relying on your natural gifts. It would be like having a great nest egg pension plan.

Bernstein's right in what he's saying.

I think Bernstein spoke about Roy and Hopkins and made a great comparison. He said a 40 year old Hopkins gives a 26 year old Roy more trouble than a 26 year old Hopkins.

Thats pretty smart and i understand what he ment by it.

Definitely, I think that if Jones had/has better fundamentals, he could still be one of top guys at 175 today. I mean he still has quick hands for a guy his age, his legs aren't shot, they aren't fresh but they aren't shot, he'd be doing much better than he is now with better fundamentals.

This is the full interview. He was asked who he would rank the best fighters in the post Ali era, he said Hagler, Leonard, Pryor, Tyson, Holmes, Floyd Mayweather Jr, then went on to say that Roy should be on the list as well but he wasnt technically as good as the other fighters he'd mentioned.

              Its a pretty good interview.

Now, Manny Pacquaio was great, is great, and will hopefully retire great. I can't see him losing to a welterweight version of Tarver or Johnson.
What if he pulled an RJ and went up to 147 to fight Cotto and then came back down to 130 to fight Gamboa. I could see him looking totally different

Yeah, things as basic as lateral movement and solidly jabbing would've aided him greatly in his old age now that he's not fast enough to leap in and pop the way he'd like. It's a terrible shame to see what what was under the hood once he started slowing down.

Jones has always had a good jab, but his fundamentals were not good beyond that.

Jones had a jab but he did not like to commit to it or use it consistently, he used to half pull out when he threw it, because of his cautious defensive nature. The most ive seen him use it was probably the Pazienza fight.
