2008 Olympic Boxing Results, Day Six (Part One)

By Jake Donovan - Controversy was the theme at the start of round of 16 competition in the light heavyweight division. China's Zhang Xiaoping was the beneficiary of considerable hometown cooking (this time in a valid complaint) with his upset win over Russia's Artur Beterbiyev, while Brazilian mover Washington Silva withstood a relentless body attack to somehow prevail against Bastir Samir of Ghana.

Far less drama came out of the first four bouts of second round welterweight action, with Cuba's Carlos Banteaux Suarez made his Olmypic debut (having received a first-round bye) with a 13-6 nod over Great Britain's Billy Joe Saunders. Tureano Johnson continues to serve as a one-man wrecking crew, as the lone member of Bahama's Olympic boxing squad advances to the Quarterfinals with an emotional 9-4 upset over Ukraine’s Olexandr Stretskyy.

American medal hopeful Demetrius Andrade is scheduled to appear later in the evening. The welterweight faces Andrey Balanov of Russia in a tough round of 16 matchup. [details]
