Light Middleweight Division Has Talent, Needs Names

By Troy Ondrizek - Over the past two-days, there have been some significant changes in the boxing world, and even though the welterweights were affected by them, the greatest impact was made on the light middleweight division. The retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the upset of number one contender Vernon Forrest, by unranked Sergio Mora, has thrown this division into a position that it hasn’t seen in some time, the spotlight.

I’m going to be honest; I think the last time I wrote anything on this division was regarding the Karmazin/Spinks fight. The light middleweights have been without a champion for years and the names atop the ledger for their top contenders reads a who’s who of "who the hell are they?"

The lack of name recognition doesn’t take away from the talent level in the division. Even though the new WBC titlist Sergio Mora thinks poorly of his new home as he stated in the post fight conference, Mora said, “I will be honest that this is a horrible division and I am going back up to middleweight if there is nothing available. If I cannot make it exciting, it’s an awful division. I think everyone will agree that the welterweight division is where it is at and I cannot get to that weight. I felt strong at this weight but it’s the ugliest division in boxing. So there is a good fight at 154 then I am going to defend that belt and believe me I will defend it if there is a fight out there. If there is nothing exciting for me, it is all about what motivates me.” [details]

Kirkland seems to be the promising rising star to make serious noise in the division

How long ago this review was prepared? No Mora in ratings and Forrest is still #1

Author would better update not only ratings, but the content in essence

The oldies and bums division. Couple of rising stars who are just too green.

The same was with MW division 3-4 years ago when Pavlik and Taylor were just too green and Miranda just completely unknown, and rightfully so. Megafights like Hop-Eastman and Hop-Allen

you didn't read the article did you. It says, coming into this past weekend, the rankings were, then it talks about Mora getting ranked after ousting Forrest. And what content needs updating? The light middleweights have more to offer than it's far more glamorous bigger brother. Angulo, Forrest, (Kirkland will be exposed by Angulo but will give many trouble until his style flames out) even Chavez Jr. and add in Powell, and SMith and the division has more intrigue outside its top ten then in it. The middleweights have Pavlik and not much more beyond that. I hope that changes.

I think Jr Middleweight is going to get very interesting pretty soon.

between Kirkland, Angulo, Greene, forrest, mora, etc.

even though 9 times out of 10 i'd say it would be a boring fight this was an exception...spinks v. phillips...infact i think a rematch would help out...their first fight (on don king's website) was MUCH better than i expected but Spinks got the short end of the stick in a fight i had him comforably ahead in.

Kirkland is a beast on his way up in the division.

Mora and forrest just had a very good fight last weekend...

Angulo really put on a show in his fight on HBO's tripleheader.

So i think in the coming years guys like Angulo, Kirkland, and Mora will really help the jr. middleweights shine again.

lots of interesting fights can be made in that division.

And now Sergio Mora....... Oscar's always there and Tony, Williams and Cintron will soon be there.

Don King's still got his Showtime exlusive C rated Jr Middles..... Spinks, Garcia, Karmazin, Rivera, Simms, Phillips, Santos and Alcine.

Should be a pretty good division very soon, as long as the above C rated fighters can make something happen and move on over to HBO.

I wouldn't mind seein Mayo back at 154. I think Cintron should move up there too. They could make some exciting fights at that weight. Verno can be fun to watch dependin on his opponent, but he ain't gonna be around much longer. Some good stuff can happen if these guys get matched right.
