“Fighting Words” – Louis, Louis: Heavyweight Division Gets a Joltin’ Cup of Joe

by David P. Greisman - When the Brown Bomber soared highest, he took flight between three and seven times a year, defending the heavyweight championship against everyone from bums of the month to future Hall-of-Famers. Over an 11-year period – including an extended gap while he served his country during World War II – Joe Louis racked up a record 25 successful title defenses.

His successors haven’t exactly followed suit.

Last year, the four sanctioning body belts went up for grabs a combined six times: Wladimir Klitschko’s stoppages of mismatched opponents Ray Austin and Lamon Brewster; Nicolay Valuev’s injury-caused technical knockout win over Jameel McCline and subsequent title loss to Ruslan Chagaev; and Sultan Ibragimov’s dethroning of Shannon Briggs and subsequent defense against Evander Holyfield. Oleg Maskaev was on the shelf for the entire year. [details]

If Ibragimov comes out like suggested in the first possible situation here he'll be KO'd in 5.

Does anybody seriously consider Ibragimov to be a live dog? I think this guy is deluding himself.

Ibragimov can box and Ibragimov can brawl. The Klitschko camp is definitely preparing, at the least, for the former, according to BoxingScene.com writer Ryan ********. And as we've seen in several of Klitschko's recent fights, maintaining a distance doesn't necessarily mean one is safe from his jabs, hooks and right crosses.

Klitschko has been known to start slowly, and if his opponent has pop than pressure can heighten the intensity. Ibragimov isn't as big as Corrie Sanders, but like Sanders he is a southpaw with a quick left hand.

I'm not saying Ibragimov will win. I'm just saying that if he doesn't come out the way he did against Austin, he has to, at the least, be considered a live dog and not a complete underdog with no shot.

      Thanks for the feedback.
