The Punisher’s Calculated Quest for Cotto

By Dave Sholler - According to some intellectuals, strategy is a choice that affects outcomes. In the sport of boxing, many rely on a precise strategy to defeat a particular opponent. Some focus on an opponent’s lack of mobility. Others hone in on a foe’s failure to fend off a body attack. WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams is one of those fighters who understands the need to develop a thorough game plan. However, unlike a number of his colleagues in the Sweet Science, Williams makes sure he has backup plots should his initial line of attack falter. To the southpaw nicknamed “The Punisher,” coming into a bout with just one approach would be a fatal flaw [details]

Williams is stuck between a rock and a hard place..

No one will fight him cause his reach is flat out ******ed lol. He can give anyone problems just with his reach alone, I mean he can litterally win a fight with his jab if he trained too lol. Also, if he moves up to junior middleweight, he'll get clobbered. He doesn't really have too many options.

Williams just has to keep winning and te time will come. First step is Quintana and he may even get a chance at Mosley. He is definitely one to watch in the near future.

exactly, I don't think his very next fight will be Cotto because he wil fight Margarito next so I think he'll fight Cintron after Quintana. But if he keeps qwinning he'll end up fighting the best at welter to earn a shot at Mayweather. I think this will end up giving us a rematch with Margarito because I favor him over Cotto, but at least the welterweight mess is goiing to get sorted out.

Interesting. I know Williams is decent and all, but I doubt many will take him on. His reach advantage is far superb and honestly, I think he may be doing himself a disservice fighting at welter. JMO.

I'd like to see him defend his title atleast 2 times before getting a shot at Cotto. It would be very interesting to see how PWill handles Miguel's power and how Miguel handles PWilly's output.

Not sure if he'll get that fight with Cotto. Because Cotto is gonna fight the guy Williams beat instead of him. I know him and Marg were gonna do it but Marg lost to Williams. And after beating Gold Johnson he deserves the fight more than Paul Williams???

I agree, that's why the Judah fight makes more sense for Margarito, and in the emanwhile Cotto can stay busy with Gomez while Williams fights Quintana and Citnron gets Clottey out of the way (if he can).

I think makeing these fights has the potential to pan out perfectly and have a true welterweight champ by late 2008.
