Cliff’s Notes on The Signing of Diaz-Campbell

After many contentious weeks, the question of what comes next for arguably the World’s best 135-lber is answered. It won’t be a trip to court (at least for now) to fight promoter Don King; instead, 24-years young Juan Diaz (33-0, 17 KO, Ring Magazine #1 Contender, WBA/WBO/IBF titlist) of Houston, Texas will make a March 8th trip to Cancun for a showdown with his IBF mandatory, 35-year old Nate Campbell (31-5-1, 25 KO, #5) of Tampa, Florida. Nate should be, just slightly, the simpler fight of the two. [details]

Nice job, Cliff. My take on Diaz has always been that, while an educated man, he got caught in the middle of a power play between King and Savannah, two immovable objects at the negotiating table, or when it comes to principles in general. And sometimes book smarts mean very little in this sport, where street smarts and common sense seem to conquer all.

Glad to see the mess got sorted out just enough for everyone to stay busy (Diaz fighting Campbell, Katsidis getting Casa-Bora, and seemingly nobody getting stripped for the moment). Of course, if the winner fights the winner, then David Diaz is once again the odd man out, at least until he can land the coveted Pac fight that may never come, should Marquez fight the rematch more like he did in rounds 3-12 than 1 and 2 in the first fight.
