  • Klitschko Breaks Hand in Brewster Win

    From ESPN:

Klitschko broke left middle finger in victory over Brewster

COLOGNE, Germany -- Wladimir Klitschko fought most of his title bout against Lamon Brewster with a broken left hand.

Assistant trainer Jamen Ali Bashir told The Associated Press Sunday that the heavyweight champion broke his middle finger during his technical knockout of Lamon Brewster on Saturday night.

Klitschko iced his hand immediately after the match, and is now wearing a cast from his left hand up past his elbow, Bashir said before boarding an airplane at the Cologne airport.
"It will take eight weeks to heal," Bashir said.

Despite the injury, Klitschko dominated. He landed several strong left jabs that largely went unanswered and in the sixth round, two massive left-right combinations rocked the American. Brewster's trainer, Buddy McGirt, stopped the fight before the seventh round could start and the big Ukrainian defended his IBF and IBO titles. Both trainers said afterward that Klitschko would have knocked out Brewster in the seventh round.

The win made up for one of the most painful losses of Klitschko's career. When the two met in 2004, Brewster stopped Klitschko with a fifth-round TKO to win the vacant WBO championship in Las Vegas.

Klitschko dominated that fight early on and knocked down Brewster in the fourth round, but the American was saved by the bell. Two left hooks by Brewster in the fifth turned it around.

On Saturday, Brewster was returning from a yearlong layoff following a loss to Sergei Liakhovich in April 2006 during which he suffered a detached retina in his left eye that required surgery. The American returned to fight Klitschko without even a warmup bout.

Klitschko's record is now 49-3, with 44 knockouts, while Brewster is 33-4 with 29 KOs.

Injuries are a part of any sport and especially boxing; anyways, I hope this doesn't prevent him from fighting again this year....

Now I know why he started jabbing with the right so much during the last two rounds. Fighting and winning with a broken hand, probably in pain but not showing it, this guy has a lot of heart!

He landed so many jabs I guess something had to break. I hope he takes his time and lets the hand heal properly. To be honest I wouldn't mind if he didn't fight again this year unless it was a unification fight. I only say that because they said that a Kessler/Calzaghe fight would have a better chance if Wlad didn't fight the rest of the year. They said it would free up the money for HBO to match that 5 million dollars that the promoters wanted.

Yes he should be ready to fight again in the fall. I wouldn't mind seeing him sending Rahman into retirement. He'll need a 'stay active' fight while waiting for the winner of Ibragimov vs. Chagaev.

**** that, Canada did you see Rahman's last fight? He was lucky to get the decision win over journeyman Taurus Sykes, who worked him over for half the fight and was hitting him at will. Rahman has done nothing to earn a title shot and by giving him one would send the wrong message to any would-be contender in the hw division. I would favor a title defense against Mccall, Gomez, Valuev, or even Dimitrenko but not against a guy like Rahman who would just show up for the payday...

It should be a former titleholder if a current one is not available - McCall, Holyfield, Rahman, or Valuev. But it shouldn't be someone coming of a loss, because it is less meaningful, so that leaves Valuev out.

McCall would be good, coming off a decisive win...he's never been knocked down in a fight, Wlad could become the first to do so.

Does his win over Brew make it less meaningful since he too was coming off a loss? Anyways, I would love to see a Klitschko-Valuev fight because Wlad would definitely(lennox) hurt him and likely knock him out. IMO, that would be very impressive...
