Also, amateur and professional boxing are two different worlds. There have been plenty of great, great amateurs who haven't amounted to a hill of beans as a pro (no pun intended here). Conversely, there are plenty of great pro fighters who didn't have much of a stellar amateur career (such as Julio Cesar Chavez or George Forman).

Maybe Cuba would've produced some great champs; maybe not. Just like "how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a Tootsie Pop," the world may never know.
ummm....you do know that George Foreman won a gold medal at the Olympics rite?

But ASIDE from Stevenson, you can name Felix Savon, Joel Casamayor, Luis Rodriguez, Kid Gavilan, Benny Paret, Kid Chocolate, Florentino Fernandez (whom I've been searching for in Miami...any info would be appreciated!)
On the flip, you can list a lot of amateur stars who DID turn pro (particularly in the last 10-15 years) who have flopped as pros.

But I still think that Puerto Rico would turn out many more champs, especially compared to the size of the islands.

Really? If that is true then my all-time favorite fighter wouldn't be a Mexican (Ricardo "Finito" Lopez). You're just mad because you're not smarter than a 5th grader.

you guys need to watch that boxing documentary they showed on cuban boxing...these people are dirt poor but they train boxing at a super young age and alot of them are slick as hell too bad we never see them.
Cubans have the best amateur boxing team in the whole world, and they've had it for a while. Their discipline is incredible, these guys look like they're in some damn boot camp, different than anywhere else in the world, not to mention the only way they can do better for themselves and their families is becoming the best boxers they can be, there's a LOT of competition there.

Diaz would be considered among those who flopped at the pro game, imo.

I'm boricua but I'm being as unbiased as possible, and while I think Cuba would have had some great champs, I dont think they would have produced more world champs than PR.

Cuba certainly does have a respectable boxing program, hell both Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali went there to check it out for themselves.
