What, is Teofilo Stevenson the best answer you can give?? Look, I'm Boricua, and while I disagree with your statement, I think Cuba has had a bad rap in boxing because they potentially could have had many great champs that we dont hear of.
But ASIDE from Stevenson, you can name Felix Savon, Joel Casamayor, Luis Rodriguez, Kid Gavilan, Benny Paret, Kid Chocolate, Florentino Fernandez (whom I've been searching for in Miami...any info would be appreciated!)
On the flip, you can list a lot of amateur stars who DID turn pro (particularly in the last 10-15 years) who have flopped as pros.

But I still think that Puerto Rico would turn out many more champs, especially compared to the size of the islands.

they have like 12 million cubanos and only 4 million puerto ricans in there countries...

i doubt it the only reason puerto rico can turn more out is cause they are not commie and are capitalist and dont disown there fighters when they turn pro.

in the documentary all the kids do is box and play baseball you can say what you want but the cubans would be a serious force man its becasue the BEST didnt defect! teofilo didnt defect they had loyalty to there country, and felix savon didnt defect either.

The two greatest powers in the amateur boxing world right now are the Cubans and the Russians. Cubans can't turn pro cause of the regime and the Russians make more money as amateurs. But from what I seen from the Cubans not so much from the Russians, their boxing talent pool is enormous and they are all aggressive, technically solid fighters which leads to a lot of excitement. The russians are good too but I don't like their style of ring generalship and countering with one twos.

To say that Cuba doesn't turn out good pro's because they're Communist is to do a great disservice to Communism. Castro is a dictator and, as such, the economy of his country is not at fault (you do know Communism is an economic model, not a form of government, right?).

Also, amateur and professional boxing are two different worlds. There have been plenty of great, great amateurs who haven't amounted to a hill of beans as a pro (no pun intended here). Conversely, there are plenty of great pro fighters who didn't have much of a stellar amateur career (such as Julio Cesar Chavez or George Forman).

Maybe Cuba would've produced some great champs; maybe not. Just like "how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a Tootsie Pop," the world may never know.
