The wait is finally over. The megafight, with all the mega-hype attached, is finally upon us. Oh the joy, as the Boxing Gods have finally given us die-hard adherents something that we can build some semblance of conversation with among mainstream sports fans. With the boxing of today more appurtant to C-SPAN's Congressional hearings than ESPN's SportsCenter, it's a blessing to see a fight that can get more than internet forums jumping with anticipation. it seems like a lot of articles like these are very black and white. Denegrating boxers because they havent fought the ideal opponents( as in Floyds case) to be truly a peoples champion or as in Oscars case when they have fought the best they didnt dominate them or came up short, and fell short of living up to some peoples expectations. I only hope for an competitive battle that showcases both fighters strengths. After all both of these guys are human beings and neither is the perfect boxer. Maybe we've all been a little too critical and should just enjoy the show.Comment

the thing that gets me is, if floyd never really fought anybody, then how the hell can he be the number one fighter in the sport? how he can have all of the accolades he has, yet, he never fought anybody? how can he be in a fight with oscar de la hoya, in one of the biggest fights in boxing history if he never fought anybody. he shouldn't have all of these accolades then should he? no, but he does. that's sayong something. floyd is regarded as the best boxer p4p in the sport by the people who are actually around the sport, including shane mosley, hopkins, jim lampley, ricky hatton, and even oscar de la hoya himself, yet, he's never fought anybody. but, what many people on this forum and around the world fail to realize about floyd is, that he is so skillful and intelligent in that ring, that if he fought nothing but D-class to F-class fighters his whole career, that he'll still be considered the best boxer p4p and he'll still be the favorite in any fight whether he's never fought an A-class fighter or not, because of how great he truly is, how great his offense is, his defense is, his timing is, his overall techniques are. this is why he's in the position he's in, and add to that, many try to ruin floyd because of his attitude of not being afraid to be who he is, and many want what they call the "good guy" image. i truly believe floyd is like eminem in rap music. he is who is he and he knows he's not for everybody just like em is and everybody in the public eye is, but these two stand out because they are the best at what they do, and they are not afraid to be who they are. they don't want to be role models, but in turn, are role models just like a former wrestling icon and great named steve austin who's character stayed true to itself, and became a role model for millions. just watch, floyd mayweather will be considered an all time great, it's inevitable for him not to be one. people always want someone who is considered the best at what they do to fail if that person doesn't please them, they totally lack respect for that person. floyd is that person. on that note, this should be a great fight with a mayweather victory and a pleasing performance from both fighters. i can't wait to watch it.Comment

For Mayweather's part, he defends his image as culture bias. "Just because my friends may want to wear Timberland boots and baggy clothes, they will judge me because of that." It's called the Madison Avenue Game, and Oscar De La Hoya has mastered it. Floyd disdains it. Oscar represents all that Floyd has strived to attain in his own manner, and defeating such a beloved icon is his form of redemption against a system that he has many quarrels with.
Great article and these words couldnt have said it better. I agree that it could be a boring fight. I think the one who will decide if it will be boring will be DLH. We all know PBF will not stand toe2toe with DLH, the question is, will DLH take chances or pitty pat like he did against Mosley? DLH HAS to come forward and take big chances, he need sto press the fight. I beleive if this fight goes past the 9th round, DLH will lose by decision. I have seen DLH fade late in fights as of late and that worries me very much. DLH has to come out and win as many rounds as he can early and try to knock PBF out. Cant wait to see it, Im tired of talking about it.Comment

Let me put the record straight, I am not a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fan at all. I really do not enjoy watching him fight, he is not a fighter I like at all. But even still, I have nothing but respect for his skill. He is a great fighter, truly unbelievable skill.Comment

Exactly. De La Hoya has really run out of credit with me with regards to these super fights. Every fight, he says that he's in the best shape of his life. And every fight, he falls apart down the stretch. You can't do that against the best fighter of the last 10 years.Great article and these words couldnt have said it better.
