Boxing fans all over the world are demanding unification bouts, but instead they are only provided with meaningless mandatory defenses. We just got one out of the way between Wladimir Klitschko and Ray Austin, but now we have three more to get past. [details]

I think it's unreasonable to have expected the unifications to be begun this early into the year. I want to see them as much as the next guy but mandatories have earned their right at a shot- and the politics of boxing have made unification matches hard to create. Let's wait until later into the year before we begin our groaning again.

It is not surprising that there is a lack of unification in any division. The various sanctioning bodies are self perpetuating institutions which exist to pursue their own agendas. Unification diminishes their need to exist and that is why they make it difficult for unification to happen.
