  • What's Kellerman's "Conn-Game" All About?

By Charles Jay - You know, broadcasting a sporting event isn't the toughest job in the world, but sometimes, on the spur of the moment, and in the interest of saying something significant, you wind up saying something that is, well, pretty awkward.

For example, in the days when I was doing color commentary for Prime Network telecasts in Florida, I was interviewing Hector Camacho after a fight, and as Hector's going on and on about being "ambushed" by some promoter I turn my head downward and get a good look at the trunks he was wearing. And I see a design that, if sliced up just a little bit, might be something I'd decorate my Christmas tree with. And so, not really knowing how to describe them, and kind of being tongue-tied, I remarked that they were "colorful and, uh, noteworthy." Ugh.

When he was at USA Network, Sean O'Grady said something at a show in Tampa that raised a few eyebrows. One of the fighters had slipped on the Budweiser logo, which had been freshly painted on a new canvas for that event. After the guy got up, Sean said words to this effect - "That's what can happen when you drink too much Budweiser," which, as you might guess, gave everyone in the production truck a case of "agita." I remember Max saying something along the lines of "Im not saying Malignaggi is the same caliber fighter as Conn"

He was just trying to come up with something to say. And he did say that Malignaggi didn't necessarily remind him of Conn as a fighter.

When was this? A month ago? Is there nothing else going on in boxing? Get a hold of yourself Charles, it sounds like you're jealous of Max.

conn and maliggnaggi have caertain things in common.... most notably a lack of knockout power. conn only had 15 KO's in 64 career victories.....

also, conns reputation as great is based a lot on a loss to joe louis... much like maliggnaggi gets his credit for losing to miguel cotto

                  Seriously.

Too much time on your hands.

So....apparently all it takes to be a boxing comlumnist is to take ONE FREAKING SENTENCE out of an entire night's worth of commentary and put it under a magnifying glass?

God forbid you write about the boxing that took place.

No..you feel the need to debunk and be overly critical about some vague historical boxing refence that perhaps 2% of the listening audience even remembers.

Boxing Semi-reporters taking on Boxing Commentators.

So...since I take issue with you wasting my freaking time writing about worthless topics...and I wrote about it here....does that make me a boxing writer now too?

No. And you arent one either.

Kellerman talks a lot. It's his job. If he drops some howlers big deal! It's nothing like as big as the howler dropped by Alan Minter "There have been some injuries and even deaths in boxing, but none of them have been serious..."
