"Baby" Joe Mesi - The Big Gamble

Joe Mesi isn't like most of the other pugs you'll come across in this game.

As soon as he opens his mouth you know he's different than the rest of them. He's articulate and insightful and he expresses himself like maybe your neighbor the schoolteacher would. And that's fitting, because after all, he does have an education that allows him to teach school if that's the path he decides he wants to go down when all of this is over.

He's not mean looking or imposing like say a Mike Tyson, and he doesn't particularly look like a fighter. His jet-black hair, mahogany colored eyes, olive-colored skin and handsome features make him look like any other unassuming Italian guy you might see making pizzas behind the counter at your local pizzeria. While he's a big guy and in good shape he's not a freakish giant with bulging muscles like a lot of these other heavyweights lurking around the rings of the world today - and maybe all of that is his problem.

But those things would only be a little problem and that would only be part of the story.

"Baby" Joe Mesi, and he doesn't want you to call him "Baby" anymore, was on an incredible storybook-like run of boxing success until he ran into a right hand thrown by former Cruiserweight titlist Vasiliy "The Tiger" Jirov on a spring night in Las Vegas nearly three years ago. Mesi was undefeated, he was fighting for the second time in a row on HBO and he was being talked about as the next Rocky Marciano. You see, Joe Mesi was going to be the next great American heavyweight. [details]

What a great article by TK Stewart.. IMO, Mesi's story is one of more intreguing stories in boxing today and I hope that he can get back to where he was in his career 3 years ago. Thursday's fight on VS(I know everyone here will be watching)is going to be the 'telltale' indicator on whether Mesi should make a title run or "hang up the gloves" for good.

Im really pulling for the guy too.He made a fan out of me when he fought Monte Barrett. He showed a lot of heart and grit in that fight. He was clearly flawed, but he was also a heavyweight who could box and punch.Which seems rare in todays division.Im rooting for the guy all the way!I just hope he doesn't get hurt.

Who's watching this one tonight? I'm really interested in how Mesi looks in his first big televised fight since his comeback.

Of course I will be watching.

What I like about Mesi is that he is exciting. He has one punch power some good skills but also has a suspect chin and that makes his fights fun to watch.

If he has a strong performance tonight look for 2 more 10 rounders before facing a true contender.

Mikefromstu, I was wondering when we would hear from you on this topic. IMO this fight is really a "do or die" fight for Joe because he's already had four tune-up last year and if he doesn't have a good performance tonight then he really should consider if he has what it takes to make a successful run for a title. I'm really pulling for him tonight and hope he does really well.

i will be watching and rooting for him but i have to admit i will be very surprised if joe mesi ever defeats another top-15 heavyweight in his career....

he has just looked atrocious to me, for lack of a batter word, in the 2 comeback fights that i have watched

I like the guy, he is a decent person and a tremendous fighter but I'm worried about his state. He'll get seriously hurt if he meets big punchers like Peter, Wlad or Vitali.

Damn I don't want to see another casualty in the ring.
