I don't know about recording but it is definitely £16.95.

It will get repeated a week later on Sky Sports anyway so you can record the full fight then. Don't get the complete coverage but better than nothing.

          • "Carl Froch will beat George Groves because he is clearly the better fighter" -Jack Hirsch provides an interesting point of view from America on the huge British showdown

            http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/late...better-fighter

GREAT controversies mean great matchups, but not necessarily great fights. Hopefully that is not the case when Carl Froch and George Groves square off in their eagerly awaited rematch May 31.

In Britain people are over the top in anticipation of the rematch, not nearly as much in the United States. Over here the talk involving Froch-Groves the sequel has to do with the reported 80,000 that will be hand in Wembley Stadium to witness the event. That number serves as an inspiration that boxing is alive and well, something we do have to remind ourselves of from time to time.

Although it would be hard to find a fan in Britain who did not witness the first encounter, not many in the United States saw the fight despite it being televised live here. Because of the difference in the time zone, it took place late afternoon here and there was no replay on the AWE network who telecast the bout. The talk that day was of Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Brandon Rios. Pacquiao’s iconic status stole a lot of the thunder the Froch-Groves match created before and after. However, the reverberations have been felt on this part of the shore resulting in HBO telecasting the rematch.

Grudge matches are usually a dime a dozen. As soon as the fight is over both contestants hug and let go of any hard feelings that had built up over time. One can sense though that there is genuine dislike between these two contestants. Perhaps both will bury the hatchet when it is over much as David Haye and Derek Chisora did after their fight. Don’t count on it.

Of course if Groves wins or if there is a massive controversy favoring Froch, a trilogy is possible. Don’t count on it. At the end of the day the hype should mean very little in determining the outcome. The better man will win and that is Froch.

Those fancying Groves’ chances point to the first fight where he knocked down Froch, badly hurting him in the opening round, then out speeding him over the first eight to build up what appeared an insurmountable points lead. Despite turning in the performance of his life it was not good enough to be crowned the new champion. Despite Groves’ bravado of how he has gotten inside of Froch’s head, you have to wonder if the opposite is true. If ever Groves was going to beat Froch that first fight was his best chance. The Nottingham man took Groves a bit lightly, looked physically frail in comparison to past fights and struggled mightily. Yet he still found a way to win.

This rematch is being predicated on Groves being hard done by referee Howard Foster’s early intervention. And make no mistake about it the third man did step in too early. But who suffered more because of that? Groves lost, but seemed to be slowly fading when he was badly rocked in the ninth round. Although he might have survived that session, it looked like Froch would have gotten him out of there around the 11th round had Foster allowed things to run their natural course. And had Groves made it to the finish, Froch would have undoubtedly gotten the verdict on points which would have been as big a controversy as Foster hastily stepping in. Entering the ninth round Groves was ahead by scores of 78-73, 76-75, and 76-75. Those last two scores were preposterous. I had it 78-73 for Groves. However on the official cards Froch would have either pulled ahead by a point or been even with three rounds to go. The momentum was with him which leads one to believe that Carl would have managed to at least take two out of the last three rounds had Groves regrouped. In that event we would have been talking about a controversial decision rather than a controversial stoppage.

My feeling is that Froch peaked in the Lucian Bute fight and the Mikkel Kessler rematch. A fighter sometimes has a small window in his career where he reaches heights he can never hold for long. Consider Junior Jones. The Jones that defeated Orlando Canizales and Marco Antonio Barrera twice within a relatively short period of time was arguably an all-time great, but he was not able to maintain that high level for more than a very short duration of his career. The same with Pipino Cuevas who was a murderous puncher for about a year and a half of his career, but not especially devastating otherwise. So be it with Froch who had appeared to peak against Bute and Kessler, then inevitably slowed against Groves.

In picking a winner for a rematch we tend to use first fights as a guideline, then determine who can improve more the second time around. Both men will have to adjust and I think both will. Groves looked sensational for a good part of the fight, but he had his petal to the medal throughout, fighting at such a furious pace that it was inevitable that he would slow down. And when he did the disparity in talent started to play out.

Froch will enter the ring much better prepared this time and start faster. Carl will win rounds that he did not win before in large part because Groves is not likely to fight with the same intensity throughout. He simply could not maintain that torrid pace over the full 12 rounds. Groves will move and fight well in spurts hoping to impress the judges, but not come close to displaying the level of domination he did in the first fight before tiring. He was like a marathon runner who tore away from the pack early in the race, then crashed in the later miles when the pace caught up with him. Without the reckless abandon he displayed in the first fight, Groves simply is not on Froch’s level to win many rounds against him.

The competitive nature of the first fight withstanding, the rematch carries little suspense as to who will actually win. It can’t be anyone but Froch who is clearly head and shoulders above his rival. Something tells me that after a few rounds Groves will concern himself more with going the distance than winning the fight. I think that he will gain that moral victory, but the official one will go to Froch by a 117-111 margin (9-3). The better fighter will win. They usually do, don’t they?
