Andrew Selby and Antony Fowler fly the flag for GB while Jason Quigley and Joe Ward face the world’s best

ANDREW SELBY and Antony Fowler have guaranteed the GB boxing team two medals at the World championships. At the semi-finals on Friday (October 25) they have the chance to turn those bronzes into silver or gold.
Selby is a class act but his quarter-final against Kazakhstan’s Ilyas Suleimenov was another outstanding result when you consider how hard it has been to beat the local men at this tournament in Almaty. There are eight Kazakhs in the semi-finals of these Worlds, compare that to five Cubans and four Russians.
Selby can exact some vengeance on behalf of Paddy Barnes who lost to Uzbekistan’s Jarsurbek Latipov. Selby beat the Uzbek at this stage in the 2011 Worlds but under new rules and without headguards, Latipov could find success if he manages to make it an ugly bout.
Antony Fowler has come through grueling bouts, beating the Ukrainian, Dymtro Mytrofanov and German, Stefan Haertel. His nose was bloodied, his face bruised as he got through the quarter-final and now he has to face local boxer Zhanibek Alimkhanuly.
In the other semi-final Jason Quigley, Ireland’s hot shot middleweight, goes in with Russia’s Artem Chebotarev, a seasoned, proven performer. That will be a high quality encounter. Quigley’s team-mate Joe Ward has to deal with Cuba’s Julio La Cruz and will need a special performance to prevail here. Ward, though a youngster, has won the Europeans, in 2011, and before the last Olympics beat the Russian, Egor Mekhontcev, who went on to win London 2012 gold.
Approximate UK times:
Quigley-Chebotarev 10.30am
Fowler-Alimkhanuly 10.45am
Selby-Latipov 1pm
Ward-La Cruz 2.45pm
The championships are being shown on the BBC red button or the AIBA youtube channel
