McCloskey could get Khan crack
Dungiven’s Paul McCloskey has moved in to pole position to challenge boxing’s latest sensation Amir Khan for the WBA light welterweight title.
Golden Boy’s latest golden boy’s next fight is due to take place this side of the Atlantic and after Khan couldn’t agree terms with his original choice of opponent, Lamont Peterson, the world champ is now looking at the Derry stylist for his homecoming bout.
The Bolton puncher, who is keen to unify the division within the year, said his team are trying to finalise a fight over the “next few days” with the most likely opponent to be European Champion McCloskey.
Khan is adamant Peterson is no longer option and McCloskey looks set to benefit. The undefeated Derry fighter now appears to be a few days away from securing a sensational World title tilt in the MEN Arena in Manchester on 16 April.
“Peterson had demanded a huge figure and it is just too much money,” Khan explained.
“My management are looking at all the options. McCloskey has approached us. He's an undefeated fighter. I'm happy to take the fight on. The next level for him is world title and I'm more than happy to take the fight on. He's a good fighter," he added.
It is a massive opportunity for the 31 year old slick southpaw, who is down to defend his European title against Italian Michele Di Rocco in Belfast on March 5, and he is determined to grab it with both gloves.
McCloskey has been trying to secure a fight with the Olympic gold medallist since claiming the continental strap and could now be just 12 rounds from international stardom.
“It’s a fight I have wanted for some time and I have earned the right to fight Khan the traditional way by winning the British and European titles and I’m unbeaten. We should hopefully know if the fight will happen over the next two days. It would be a great fight for the public and I know that I can beat him.”
