The WBO champ is sometimes better than the other champs. IMO they are no better or worse than the other 2 organisation whcih were also formed by disgruntled delegates walking out of the WBA's offices. All four of these big brand organisations are corrupt as poo and stink of ****! What pisses me off most is not the fatc that they have ranking systems that are easly manipulated, or that the have paper champs to fill the gaps. It is the fact that they create hurdles when it comes to unification bouts. A fighter shouldn't have to relinquish one title in order to get another!

I'm surprised boxing fans still don't really understand how promoting works, it really isn't as cut and dry as every promoter ripping off all these boxers etc.

I've been involved in music, sports & entertainment events industry promotion for around 20 years & promoters are almost always the recipiants of the biggest complaints especially from bands, artists, fighters etc.

I'm not saying people like Don King or Frank Warren are all squeeky clean & above board however fans need to have a better understanding of how things work before making huge assumptions about the business end.

Firstly in any normal type of work, one is espected to understand how that industry works before they embark on a career within that industry but all too many times artists, fighters, bands & musicians don't know anything about the business of what they love. You wouldn't expect to hire a lawyer who didn't understand law or an accountant who didn't understand accounts?

So why is it ok and excepted that talented & creative people be ignorant to how the business aspects of their industry works? Most of these fighters or anyone creative or talented work in their respective industry for years, honing their craft however most always stear well clear of any business aspects and leave it upto a representative to handle important aspects which effect their livlihood. I know that if I was risking my life everytime I fought, I'd want to at least have an overview and maybe a little briefing on what effectivly is my livlihood. If perhaps I wasn't the brightest then I'd have someone I trusted break it down for me.

Developing a profile for a boxer isn't like other sports because most other sports have self contained bodies or organisations who's task it is to look at the wider marketing & promotions of that sport, then if it's a team sport there's the club itself which caries out marketing & promotions and there's enough staff so that everything lends itself for players to just concentrate on playing.

Individual sports like Golf or Tennis have a very closed and tightly run bodies like the ITF or PGA. It's also important to note where boxing comes from in comparison to these other sports, Boxing will always be the everyman sport.

In Boxing the key people are a fighters handlers, manager or trainers and their promoter, that's it. Alot of boxers keep it simple and trust the close circle of family, friends & people around them and that limited environment means it's relatively simple for a slick promoter to sweet talk handlers, trainers & boxers into deals because there are only a handful of promoters who have the credentials, contacts and resources to facilitate the successful development of a boxers career.

Over the years, promoters have built up amazing rosters and contacts all over the world from trainers, venue's, gyms, tv execs, sponsors, drivers, admin staff, promo teams, printers, graphic designers, hotels, restaurants & drivers to their clout & relations with boxing bodies, media, refs, judges etc.

A promoter has the ability to make or break your career and how they choose to conduct business varies, there are the hard grafters, the big time charlies and the young, rich, dumb but truly dedicated.

Promoters only get better with experience because each deal they do, there's aspects to learn how to do things better the next time. Inevitably there are promoters who aim to exploit the ignorance of fighters in order to maximise their profits however there are always financial risks for the promoters.

The bottom line is, individuals need to take personal accountability for their business especially when they are risking their lives and they shouldn't be intimidated into NOT asking questions for fear of exposing their shortcomings.

Boxers study other boxers but they should also take a look at the financial aspects of boxing history, look at how deals were made back in the day to how deals are made today. For example Golden Boy are in my opinion the number one most innovating promotions out there in this sport. What they are doing and how they have tied in several sponsors is both creative and innovating not just for boxing but for marketing in general. They have a fantastic business model which uses the best aspects of boxing & marketing knowledge to achieve their objective's.

However every promoter has been innovating for their time, there's no doubt Don King has been innovating promotions for years and continue's to be pushing the envelope in new markets and making maximum use of his own personality to achieve success not just in boxing but a variety of promotions.

Warren, also undoubtedly has a blueprint of developing 'brand name' fighters. Yes we can all sit on our couches and criticise how he rears his fighters with easy fights but he has achieved a track record of success and nobody can deny that the boxers he has been affiliated with have all been exciting to watch for fight fans.

For boxers such as Hatton or Calzaghe who left him later in their career, there's no doubt these boxers would never have the status they enjoy today were it not for the collective work of their teams & their promoter. They are both great fighters but the promoter is usually the guy with the imagination, the one that can make a fighters dream actually come true. The one who has more to lose than anyone else except the fighter himself.

We'll see how the new breed of promoters like Hatton & Calzaghe do, no doubt they will have alot of integrity & respect from young boxers, they will also have a more direct line of communications & contacts with TV Execs & Sponsors however they didn't work from the ground on up to make those contacts, they earnt those contacts through their success in the ring and this doesn't always translate to success in busines especially in the UK where enterprise isn't like it is in the US.

Warren to me represents a grafter done well, he's old school and has learnt what he has every step of the way himself, we can critic him but we can't deny him his success & achievments. He's worked for every contact & learnt every little trick through experience, he's tasted both the sweetness of success and bitterness of failure and fall outs, which makes him a more rounded and experienced character and a more formiddible businessman. Although a boxer goes through the physical trauma, the promoter has to go through countless emotional cycles, dealing with 100's of characters, delicatly weaving through ego's and constantly having to handle multiple personalities who need re-assurance, encouragement or sometimes discipline.

The new generation might have had a short cut but when push comes to shove the UK isn't the US and when Haye, Hatton & Calzaghe set their sights over to Goldenboy, BHop & Mosley, they are dreaming if they think they can dethrone Warren how Goldenboy has King as the no1 Boxing promoter.

The way Warren has developed his business, he can lose it all and build it all up again but these boxers are having to get in other people to represent them and carry out the work. Things don't always get done how you want them done and you can only go so far using students, just ask Haye & Booth!

If we want to look at real crooks then look no further than the likes of Panos Eliades, who was Lennox Lewis' ex promoter & business advisor, not to be mistaken for Frank Maloney who was his manager.

Promoter Frank Warren has signed three British 2008 Olympic boxing team members, Gold medalist James DeGale along with Billy Joe Saunders and Frankie Gavin to promotional pacts. The announcement will be made in Islington this morning. "They all have a great pedigree at amateur level and are under no illusions of the hard work and commitment required to succeed. Their amateur records are second to none and I have no doubt that these boys are British world champion boxers in the making," said Warren, who has guided the careers of Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Nigel Benn, Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and Amir Khan among others.

Well, there's another 3 careers ruined.
I like Billy Joe the most, so i'm hoping for good things to come his way. Degale is promising, and Gavin is definitely the most suited for the pro's.

One thing amateur boys must agree on when signing with Warren is the terms.

I know they want the money as soon as possible, but Warren will feed you bums for your first 10 fights, making your record look impressive. With this in mind, i would sign a 10 fight deal with Warren, with an option of signing on after. After 10 fights, your record would look mostly like 10-0 (8).

Then i would move on. If i was as talented as these 3 lads, and Warren was after me, i'd be the one negotiating a better deal for me. F.uck Frank.

I don't think any of them 3 will be big enough names after 10 fights with Warrren to move on. Maybe after 15 or 20 they could go it alone and self promote, but they would have to win something big or impress in a huge way to do that. The problem is Warren has lost his big fighters, but no other promoter has really taken his place at the top. I think these 3 will stay with Warren for a while because nobody else will offer them bigger purses.

Most fighters first 10 fights will be made up of bums. They need to get used to the pro game and get their record looking good.
