I wonder why Louis would say such nonsense.

      What do you mean?

As I already stated his weight was only slightly higher for baer.

The not looking like a bully thing sounds like the nonsense to me.

Coming in light would be employed for speed and stamina reasons.
With that said he didnt really come in light did he? Haha.

        - -Pay attention.

His fight wts had been nudging upwards as he matured, so he came in 4-5lbs under what he was used to, easily accomplished by stopping hydration the night before the weighin and further skipping breakfast which is no big deal.

        Why did he do that?

Answer as I mentioned previously, public perception. His words, not mine indicated he didn't want to seem like a big bully.

Louis an easy guy to manage other than the girl factor that kept mgt in a scramble. Line em and and he knocks em down. My personal opinion is he would not have chosen to fight Conn who was smallish for LH.

So he went in with some negativity coupled with overconfidence that Conn exploited, an off night for Louis til Conns ****iness made him careless, so Louis closed the show.

The popular Conn became more so, hence the rematch.

Time to move on with your perception of this fight adjusted. Louis in the 220s when he retired still ring ranked for all but his first year.

Except when after Chappie Blackburn passed; Louis (for many reasons) became almost impossible to handle.

One example: after the NYSAC tried to screw Louis at the last minute, by changing the Walcott 10 round no-decision fight to a 15 round defense, Louis walked away from training camp and didn't show back up until just before the fight.

His new manager/trainer tried to pass it off as being afraid he might 'over-train,' (with the switch from 10 to 15 rounds NYSAC gave Louis an extra month to prepare,) but we know how unprepared and disinterested Louis showed up that December night.

With Chappie Blackburn gone, with the NYSAC and the IRS screwing with him, (and a War) it is amazing, post 1942, that Louis was able to muster any kind of a decent performance.
