  • Was Sam Langford the best fighter ever?

From what I have read about him, It seems so. He was a lightweight, but dude fought elite welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight black fighters of his era, beating the most of them.

Beat lightweight champion Gans, boxed to a draw with Barbados Walcott for welterweight title, fought all elite black heavyweights many times...

I am impressed with this man.

Read Stories about him. Might be pound for pound the best boxer in his era.

I could have sworn I wrote out all his awards I know and asked if anyone else knows of more....guess I didn't click post, damn.

So, there's the 5X Colored HW title

        Also the Black HW title

        Also the Colored MW title

        NSC HW title

        NSC MW title

        Aussie HW title

        Mexican HW title

        FBF HW title

        IBU HW title

I'm sure there's more because they're not all on the record sites. For example, Boxrec doesn't cover the black HW title claim which happened when Sam fought Klon***e. I believe at the time Jeanette was Colored, but it wouldn't matter as Sam would unify them. I believe the same is the case for the NSC and IBU, everyone recognizes the NSC win but not the IBU recognition. So unless you get off the record sites you won't know he had actually had more titles and awards given to him. I doubt I've found them all.

For any just interested in the lineage of Langford's title

        Langford, Godfery, Savold, Liston

The IBU recognized Godfrey in 1935

        then Savold in 1950

Liston starts the EBU recognition of WBC champions.

Which has always made me wonder, why do we force succession into lines rather than charts like a monarchy? I've in my free time been working on a champions chart, but, since my ass started with the 1720s It's a bit slow starting.

Nope. Not even close. He wasn't even the best of his era.
