Can you imagine George fighting today?

That was Quarry fighting in the 70s. Talented and ferocious, but undersized.

I personally think so with a few caveats admittedly. I think George when mentally and physically on the dime, his best nights is a murderous puncher that exceeds the pure Horsepower of Liston. But my dear Rusty...as you no doubt are aware, having brothers, and living in an area where cars are part of growing up...Its the Torque that makes the rubber move the road! Liston was consistent and could use combinations to set up his big shots a whole lot better. For example, on his worse outings Liston never would get into the battle Royale that Foreman had with Lyle.

I know you probably will mention the competition that Liston faultered with...its a fair point.

Liston is better than Foreman like Finito is better than Saddler, or Marquez is better than Crawford.

Quarry would have no chance vs Foreman. Jerry would either get beaten to a pulp resulting in a refs stoppage or the doctor at ringside stopping it on cuts. Jerry could not beat Frazier nor Ali. He was not beating the other ATG of the 70’s.

Frazier beat the best Ali. Foreman beat Frazier. Ali beat Foreman.

Quarry used work Norton over in sparring; even knocking him out. Ali, arguably, lost 3x to Norton.

Ali, Lyle and Holmes went life and death with Shavers. Quarry put him away in 1 Round.

            Styles make fights.

            George struggled with Peralta.

Watch how Jerry handled Lyle and Mathis. Jerry was surging. Everyone who was supposed to use him as a stepping stone he crushed.

Maybe Foreman wins. But it's not a foregone conclusion. With Gil Clancy in his corner (not the case, I know), I'd put money on Jerry.

What Ali did wasn't rocket science. Of course his size and athleticism (slong with su****iously lose ropes) were essential. But George was far from a mystery to solve. Especially if you weren't scared and knew how to Box.... who's that sound like?

My info comes from commentary from fights on utube.Prior to Quarry taking out the highly ranked and undefeated Lyle Foreman was being interviewed by Howard Cosell who was busting his balls about quarry and George was laughing it off.Howard then says if Jerry beats Lyle you will defend against him and George is dancing around the subject. The Lyle fight was an upset and I don’t think George thought Lyle would lose as Lyle was being touted as his next opponent before his fight with Roman. He fought Roman ten months later so there was time .He clearly was banking on fighting Lyle then Roman. On the Lyle Quarry telecast he busted his balls about fighting quarry after he won and George would not commit.Styles make fights and I don’t think Foreman thought he would lose but knew it would be tough.Jerry had trouble with quick slashing punchers and would cut but vs a huge puncher like Lyle it was not a problem as he was a marvelous counter puncher .If you think Lyle couldn’t punch watch him knocking Foreman on his ass a couple times and hurting him several times a year and a half later.Slower punchers his defense and counter punching made him dangerous.

                - -First off Howie trying to be a match maker only one of many elements of his being a blowhard.

George fresh off lifting the Frazier title early on declared his independence from boxing fetters. He became his own mgr after ditching Sadler but keeping him as trainer that proved fatal to George a few fights later. You don't understand the economics of that era. All George's defenses were overseas after he won the title overseas. NY state would extract half the George purse in the Quarry fight offer whereas Japan let him keep all the same purse vs Roman who at least had a title to sell.

First 4 title fights and 3 prime Frazier, Norton, Ali, so all due respect to the always game Quarry, they were never in the always reshuffled cards as a pair in the ring.

Quarry is not beating prime Foreman. What Jerry did to Lyle or Shavers is meaningless. The Foreman Lyle fought was 15 months inactive. (Aside from the exhibition in Toronto). Shavers chin was made of glass. Lyle was easily outboxed as he was slow as molasses. Foreman in his prime was multi levels over either Lyle or Shavers. Quarry would be slides to ribbons by the Foreman jab alone. A bet on Quarry would be a fools bet.

                    Thanks for setting that straight.

I always wondered why George turned down big money to fight Quarry in MSG, preferring unknown Roman in JPN.

Since when did Shavers have a glass chin?

Since when was Lyle easily out-boxed?

When did Foreman out-jab anyone; especially a superior mover/defensive boxer?

Maybe Foreman wins. But even then Lyle would be the Conn to Foreman's Louis.
