As with both baseball and football, in the early 1900s amateur champions in boxing were often recognized as equal and in some cases as better than their professional counter parts.
George Dixon, the professional didn't get undisputed recognition of the festherweight title until he defeated Jack Skelly, recognized amature champion at the Carnival of Champions in 1892, New Orleans.
This information wasn't for you, it is in case others might want to know.
But for you . . . Amature boxing early on was far more expanded than you understand.

He did defeat Evander and he made some good money through his Heavyweight years. ..............Rockin'
