Jake LaMotta and Bobby Chacon used to sit in the sauna to make weight.

Today, fkrrs can dehydrate till the day before the fight and rehydrate after the weigh in.
I was thinking more about fighters moving up in weight rather than fighters training down.

But yeah I guess you did get guys who would try gain an advantage that way. Generally though, from what I’ve seen, fighters moving up tended to find a comfortable weight and not feel the need to go right to the limit of the new weight class

      Worked for George Foreman.

To build big muscle , you will need to load up on protein too.
Boxers will never be really huge because they don't overload with protein.
And they run in the morning on an empty stomach.

--- Guess you never got the email back in the day!

Boxers of means trained heavily on steak and egg diets. Roberto Duran not only chomped up two full g****fruits tossed to him that he caught like softballs for theSRL rematch, but walked next door for two porterhouse steak dinners. Hence stomach cramps that were polite code for the huge dump in his dressing room...the way it was...

One of my student's dad was a local promoter (Miami) who was working with Duran during the early '00 years - the girl told me that Duran told her: the reason he quit was because he was about to lose his s**t, literally. Personally I didn't buy the excuse (actually neither did she) but it was, during those years, what Duran claimed happened.

--- Never thought much of NYCommish of which Randy Gordon was one if I got his name right.

He was in the dressing room when Duran stormed in and went straight for the bathroom and produced a phew and cry for the ages.

Ray was always tainted by refusing the rubber until Duran was near 40 and then ran from an ol'man in another of his cash grabs.

He had to take a massive shít. I figured that out a long time ago. He should have shít his trunks and then cut the ring off. Leonard would have been running so hard he couldn't have won a decision. Someone should have brought a port-a-potty for the corner after two porterhouse dinners. Use that instead of a stool. Have plenty of towels handy, a crowd of likable associates to stand around the boxer, a high powered water nozzle and a designated wiper. Duran was not out of the fight yet, he could have won. What a difference a dump makes.

                  Yes--but WHY?

Why shouldn't one match a 158lb Sugar Ray Leonard against a 218lb Mike Tyson (circa 1987) if strength is irrelevant to boxing success?

They are fairly similar in height & reach, no?

Q: Supposedly fighters don't bother with weights. Do you?

A: We'd always said boxers shouldn't lift weights. Now I realize some champion boxer started that rumor. I noticed if I did weights a couple of times a week, I would be able to hit that jab a lot longer. After sparring, everybody's gone and I sneak into the weight room. Spend 40 minutes in there lifting weights.

--- When I was debating the steroid issue on AOL baseball boards, I embarked 4 months of a heavy weight lifting regime alternating two different sets of daily exercises 6x per week to rest on Sunday like our creator.

All the while I was maintaining my regular boxing type regime of hitting the heavy bag at least 15 straight rounds without rest and then immediately embarking on a 2-3 mile run in my 40 acre park 30 sec away. Maintained my standard diet of pizza, tacos, and BBQ with beer with only an extra portion of meat thrown in for protein. I gained 13% pure muscle as a mature guy already in good shape, and the testa built up by the weightlifting had me swaggering around looking for a fight that I had to constantly put in check.

And I've also got a large skull and trace acne on my back and had so since I was 15 and came into my man strength. Net result is that I proved to all those Nancy drug accusation ninnies that visual physical assessments don't necessarily indicate PED use.

I rather enjoy being right, but of course anyone can misspeak or make a mistake, but how many learn from them?
