I've heard that too but most sources say it was untrue and that he claimed that in order to honor a dead friend or something like that.

What kind of chance would poor old Greb stand against modern men who eat balanced meals. Balanced meals make a man much faster. I read it right here.

He would be even greater, perhaps. These old timers lived hard lives in and out of the ring and it took its toll. Fewer fights, higher paydays and a more comfortable life they have today.

Out of all the old school boxers it's greb that catches my attention the most....incredible record and fearing absolutely no man in that ring no matter how big he was.....I think him and Mickey walker came to blows in a restaurant just after they had fought that night....stuff of folklore he was

The reality is Greb might not be as much fun to watch as he is to read about. Swarmers seldom pack a big punch, and he was no exception. Such fighters are generally boring to me in spite of their high activity levels. He may have been so good at the style that he didn't bore.

              He was an interesting character:

              1. He was a bit of a dirty fighter (although to be fair, most fighters during this era took liberties with the rules).

              2. He truly loved the sport and was always ready to sign up for his next bout just as soon as his previous one was finished.

              3. Had a serious eye injury that he hid from most people in his life.

              4. One of the sad ironies for boxing fans is despite his exciting style, to this date no film of him exists partaking in an actual fight.

              5. Was supposedly extremely vain and the surgery that eventually led to his death was undertaken because he didn't like the way his nose looked after years of fighting.

Yeah, that's the incredible part to me. That there's no film footage of any of his fights.

You can say anything about that old fighters, but they were as tough as they come, Greb fought hundreds of fights and many of them are unlisted, used to drink and smoke a lot, fighting in bars, going with a lot of girls, and getting in the ring with anyone, he was filmed, but the footage disappeared, the only fighter i never saw but i wish i could. (well they are some others like Jackie Beard, Felix Betancourt, Bernard Mays and few others)
