  • Floyd Patterson as a HW champion

Floyd was humble guy down to earth,i watched some Docs about him,his friendship with Ingemar Johansson.

but how you rate him as a champion,he had short decent run with belt,2 monsters of HW ended his championship dreams,Liston and Ali.Ali hated Patterson and punished him badly in theyr fight,i think that Floyd lost confidance and drive to win that night.

His HoFer ofc but we have high standards ,for Garcia or Canelo but Imo Patterson resume is not far batter.

but lets talk about his legacy as a champion.

He fought in defens of his title with debuting Pete Rademacher, which is historical event and never happend again.

he bringed something new to the game,he was fast handed Champion with new style ,trained by Cus D'Amato ofc.

he became the youngest boxer in history to win the title, and was also the first heavyweight to regain the title after losing it.(in that time)

he was tough man and good guy .(not a legacy ofc, just my impression)

he was olympic golden medalist in MW.

FOTY from 1965 not as a champion doe.

His title regin was not impressive ,i feel like he was like Rocky he just had good moment to capture the title, and he hold it till better fighters apeard(Liston,Ali)

How do you rank him among HW champs?

i like Floyds quote on boxing : "It's like being in love with a woman. She can be unfaithful, she can be mean, she can be cruel, but it doesn't matter. If you love her, you want her, even though she can do you all kinds of harm. It's the same with me and boxing. It can do me all kinds of harm but I love it."

or "They said I was the fighter who got knocked down the most, but I also got up the most." it shows his toughness and force of will,i admired Floyd for fighting to the end ,he was true champion but not great one.i peronaly rank him among likes of Spinks,Norton and Frazier ,good champs but not special .

This man could be SPECIAL LHW,could be.....

He was a decent champ, just not a great one...

Highly skilled, but didn't have the size, power, chin, toughness or durability to really hang with other great heavies..

His reign as champ was average... Not horrible but he really wasn't in a deep era at heavyweight. I don't think he would be champ in the 70s,80s or 90s unless it was a paper title.. I just don't see him beating ali, frazier, foreman, holmes, tyson, evander, bowe, lennox. Even the klitchkos would be heavy favorites over him...

Much like Michael moorer, probably would have been a dominant great at a lower weight

Holding the heavyweight championship of the world is always special and it meant even more back then. To do it aged just 21 is special. Plus he did it with style and speed.

But like you said, he was more of a transitional champion. I don't think he beats the two great names before him or the 4 great names after him.

Still he'd rank higher than canelo or garcia because of the heavyweight championship achievement.

Floyd would be at cruiser in todays age.
He'd have far too much talent for anyone there.

          Underrated.
Floyd waa great fighter, also very balanced, he was protected during his reign, but fought plenty of good fighters when he was a contender again.
As a cruiser or even a light heavy, he would have been a beast.

today he would likely be at least a unified cruiserweight champ because of his skillset. I could see him schooling and humiliating a lot of current fighters

Yes, considering how fighters cut weight these days i can ser him being at 175, Beterbiev was an amateur heavy and a pro light heavy, Patterson was a middleweight amateur, he was only 17 tho.

I think Patterson would have a little trouble with that much of a weight cut as a grown man, but if he could comfortably make 175 I'd love to see him fight bhop for some reason

In a pound for pound sense he should rank highly.

Patterson wasn't a true heavyweight really but his skills were such that he was good enough to have a couple of title reigns there. He knew how to fight very well.
