  • The age old Debate.

How would the Top champs from the past hold up against today's best realistically? With modern training methods/equipment etc and fitness vs the old days.

I don't see many of the old guys realistically beating the modern guys.

And no the old guys get none of the modern benefits.

Again this is not a debate about who is better but rather a debate into the evolution of the sport.

    What say you?

Well the deck is stacked against the old-timers if they are forced to fight under modern rules ie only 12 rounds, bigger gloves, stricter referees etc.

Imagine how it would be if it was the opposite. 45 rounds, 4 ounce gloves etc.

In case of your fantasy fights taking place under old-school rules, I don't think the modern boxers would dominate at all.

          "With modern training methods/equipment etc"

Can you explain what "modern training methods" are used today?
Are their newer techniques used today is the methodology any different?
Any new punches or movement done today that wasn't around "back then"?
How does the newer "fitness" compare to the "older" fitness. Today they barely exhaust themselves over 12 rounds years ago the 15 round championship fights were action packed throughout the bouts generally speaking.
We just saw a Heavyweight Championship bout that didn't exceed 100 punches thrown over the entire fight by BOTH fighters combined! So much for the NEW!

Well, for starters, they could not find things to lift in the old days. They looked, but the things to lift just were not around in those days.

Another new thing they do these days that an old time trainer like yourself would not know anything about but have probably heard about, is running. Yes, they do that now. They train like that. As the sport evolved, fighters got into running. It was a brilliant concept. I am not sure who first came up with it. I guess it was just evolution.

I'll be damned if the fighters these days don't spar, Ray. That is where they get in the ring with other boxers to sharpen up in the weeks before a fight.

They carry little gadgets that will actually count the number of steps they have taken on a morning jog, they call it. The old fighters couldn't do that! Even if they did run they would have no idea how many steps they had taken. They called that being in shape, then they had to go out and fight.

They got a man who comes around with canned muscle for those who want it. The whole gym runs over like kids at a penny scramble. Cute as hell to see those grown men act that way, shooting themselves up with the total happiness of children. A more sentimental man might call it beautiful.

So, yeah, they got plenty they didn't used to have. You need to update yourself.

Here's the most notable changes that in some ways has hurt the sports growth.
              TV
              Closed Circuit
              ppv

all of the above contribute to the lack of support of local gyms to develop local fighters for local shows.
The foundation of any activity is the ground floor participants and the small non televised shows that groom possible talents.
Not every talent comes off a national amateur team. Most do these days but when there's more opportunity they come from the ground floor up.

Today's generations do not seem interested in becoming involved in a sport that takes so much dedication to time and effort. Boxing becomes a life style and it has sacrifices that can be difficult to accept.

I do laugh at the "modern training techniques" that no one can identify!
But then again listening to fans talk about training is hysterical, I need to participate on a lung transplant forum to discuss my feelings on a successfully transplanting organs.

Fans, "you can't love em but you can knock them out"!

......fishing was fantastic this season, it is getting to hot to go out now it takes the fun out of the trip. 90+ degrees on the water is to much for me but my freezer is filled with filet.
Selling my boat and a few cars and one bike to cut down on the toys, it's time.
Sold 3 bikes this past week.

Benefits like the stair-master. What was a fighter to do if he lived where there were no skysc****rs?

Well as for weight the socalled modern fitness machines has been replaced with old fashioned weights in most nfl team gyms.

And back in the very old days they used other stuff as can be seen in this thread I made many years ago:
