  • Hagler-Minter

Just yesterday I watched (for the 1st time) the infamous Marvin Hagler vs. Alan Minter fight that took place Sept. 27, 1980:

It was an interesting fight as long as it lasted. As Minter said later, he felt that he used the wrong approach, slugging with Hagler. Frankly I'm not sure that it would have mattered much. Minter was notoriously prone to cuts (7 of his 9 losses were due to being stopped on cuts) and he would have either been outslugged, outpointed or (most likely) cut bad enough to force the stoppage well before the 15 round limit was reached.

At the end of the fight, I saw all the beer bottles being thrown into the ring. The announcer, who was British, commented that this was the most shameful display that he had ever seen by boxing fans in Great Britain. He got hit a grazing blow by a beer bottle himself!

Before the fight, as the fighters met in the center of the ring to receive instructions from the referee, I noticed that Minter was somewhat taller than Hagler, maybe by 2 inches or so. Both men are listed as being 5'9" on boxrec.com though so I'm not sure whether I should believe my eyes or what is written on paper. I'm sure that a reader, probably from England, knows Minter and can satisfy my curiosity about Minter's true stature.

Here's an interesting article about that fight:
