He was "Robbed" against Montell Griffin (good fighter)..Toney was too tough and too skilled for Iran Barkley, Doug DeWitt, Hasim Rahman & Evander Holyfield.. Toney's chin was concrete and withstood the bombs of Holyfield, Rahman, Sam Peter & Roy Jones... Toney's knock outs of Prince Charles Williams & Tim Littles were brutal and legendary..James Toney at only 5'10'' with a 72'' reach was an amazing fighter, who should alway's be held in the very highest regard. By every boxing fan.
Also one of the cleanest fighter you'll ever see, looking at his attitude and his style one could assume he was a dirty boxer but I can't think of one time he had a point deducted off the top of my head (Probably 1 somewhere), even when Jirov purposefully hit him low multiple times he just shook his head, turned up a gear and went to town on him for the rest of the round (Round 6 I believe ?, can't quite remember) but there was not one sign of using his head, elbows, no low blows or rabbit punches, surprising given his I.Q in the ring and temperament.

Here here!! raises glass for toast. Nunn was a heck of a great win for Toney because even when he was getting outboxed he found a weakness, patiently exploited it and dropped Nunn. I use this fight because I think Nunn was very good.

Theres a story about Toney that somewhat relates to this point. Apparently when Will Smith was doing the Ali picture Toney wanted to do Frazier but Will was scared that Toney would hurt him.

Apparently Toney more or less sought Will out and promised him he would not harm him lol. I would bet that through working with Toney Will realized, like a lot of people that Toney was a master at his craft!

the nunn fight was a shocking upset at the time, michael nunn was considered the middleweight version of ali. when toney knocked him out, it earned him ring magazine's fighter of the year. james toney is my favorite fighter of my generation and its awesome he got to be joe frazier in the ali film

Most fighters train to fight,,, some are born to fight

Toney and duran are guys that were born to fight... They will fight anyone, anytime, any weight, and hold their own..

The more heated the fight and exchanges, the better they perform

There are no guarantees even Mike Tyson could have beaten Peter but if we take a 2 fast Tyson victory over Peter as given then that's really about it...

Could you imagine Spinks, any version against Peter?

Toney at HW simply has too much chin and power for guys like Witherspoon and Holmes I am sorry.

Yeah yeah I know Holmes shocked old Mercer and all that but really, Mercer did not apply half the pressure or pack quite the punch that PEter did.

Toney would crunch Spinks who was quite frankly a chinless, powerless, spineless weakling by comparison to Toney.

Those are simply the facts mate.
too much power for holmes and witherspoon lad you are doing some serious drugs

Clean in the ring, but not always out. Apparently tested positive in at least one post fight drug test.

But yeah, Toney's a great fighter and I watched his fights on TV live from the later '90s on. His earlier ones I missed I caught on DVD. He seemed to run out of gas in some of his earlier fights, probably from trying to make 160, but endurance seemed to increase at higher weights.

I doubt he becomes undisputed, but he'd probably hold at least one belt at heavyweight, the younger Tyson probably gets to him early and wins a UD, but it would get closer, as Toney would probably snag some of the later rounds. A prime Holyfield could beat him, if he doesn't engage in too many slugfests and fights more like he did in the second Bowe fight than the first. He would at least be competitive though.

Can you believe Toney, at 47, has another fight at the end of the month in Canada?

                    Which weight? I assume 160 or 175?

                    I would say probably not.

                    160 I doubt it.

175 he might share a series with Muhammad or Qawi but I'd pick him to lose both of those and he's not beating Spinks.

Maybe in the late 80's he could possibly have won something at 175 when it died down a little.
