  • what made duran so great?

    i still dont understand,
everyone basically says "hes the greatest lightweight ever"
yet, everyone speaks of his accomplishments at middleweight..
and in hagler fight, he clearly showed he cant adjust/fight on the inside...

That was not his gameplan for that fight Marvin was incredibly strong he altered his style and gave an alltime great middleweight an entertaining chessmatch. For infighting watch the moore or leonard 1 fight

I have said this before... Guys train to fight... Duran was "born to fight"

Duran and james toney are the only guys of the last 50 years that would fight anybody, at any weight and be competitive..

Can you imagine today, Terrance crawford fighting hearns, hagler, Barkley up in weight

let me change/clarify my question a bit..
i mean why is duran rated so highly at lightweight when everyone talks about him and his "accomplishments" in higher weight classes??

and regarding 11 KO in 12 defenses, why don't people say anything about golovkin defending his middleweight title with straight ko streaks?

because he was the lightweight champ for like 7 years...lol

And because GGG's run of opponents is nowhere near the calibre of guys like Buchanan and De Jesus...

so there were no lightweights that defeated better opposition than buchanan + de jesus?

i really dont mean to deny/discredit durans greatness, im just curious how he got to that level of respect at lightweight.

I haven't looked as deeply into the history of the sport as some on here..

To answer this question names like Leonard and Gans would get thrown around

But the fact is Duran is in the convo about the top 3...even to these nostalgists

And the fact is he had a better developed set of skills than either of them- indeed better than anyone at 135. Whitiker and Mayweather being on his level.

A lot of so called fans don't know much about his LW run because it wasnt against household names like Leonard or Hagler. He won his first title by stopping (in dirty fashion) a very good lightweight in Buchanan, then he would beat and unify the titles with De Jesus, fights some pretty good LWs in Thomspn, Lampkins and a few others. It was a thin division admittedly but the fact that he stopped almost all his opponents and fought so often, his testament to how good he was.

But what enhanced his greatness was beating some good welters and ending the run with Leonard, going all those rounds with Hagler and winning a middleweight belt. For a guy barely 5'7'', it was an exceptional feat.
