  • Calzaghe vs prime Eubank

People always say Eubank was "shot" when he fought Calzaghe. I disagree, he still had a lot of fight left in him (even in the Thompson fights), but of course he was far removed from his prime. So, how would the Eubank who fought Watson and Benn fare against prime Calzaghe from 1997-2007?

I would still pick Calzaghe by decision in a more competitive fight.

I was at the Calzaghe vs Eubank fight in Shefield 1997 and what a great fight it was. i have to agree with you that Eubank still had a little left but not much. Eubank was at the tail-end of his career and Calzaghe was a young lion, Former title holder Steve Collins had ran terrified of facing Joe Calzaghe, but Eubanks fought a tremendous battle with his younger opponent, climbing off the canvas in the opening round to then fight toe-to-toe for 12 excellent rounds of boxing. It is very difficult to say how Eubank would have fared if he was younger and fresher, he was a very tough competitor who fought at his opponents pace. So the harder Calzaghe fought, the harder Eubank would have fought. Who would have won we will never know.

I think the prime version of Eubank who fought Watson in the rematch, and even the first Collins fight (not-so-prime by that point), showed that he was dangerous in every minute of every round. I would pick the 1990-93 Eubank to edge Calzaghe on points, and around 1994-96 he would still give Calzaghe a much more competitive fight than in 1997.

          Probably go with Calzaghe.

I only ever saw one impressive performance in Eubank's career and that was the first Benn fight.

Not difficult to find a way to win when you're fighting bums for the most part.

Eubank struggled and got gift decisions against a lot of the bums he fought that's the difference between the two.

Hopkins n Kessler n bika aren't bums.... JOE has some holes in the resume, but dude always showed up big when it mattered most...

But I know you have a disdain for Calzaghe, so I'm not even going to try and debate it with you...

Hence why I said "for the most part"

Hopkins was past it and that fight was contraversal, Kessler is a good solid opponent, In a real division stacked with talent he would be little more than a tough fight. Bika, ok....I don't have to stamp in everyone to make a point. but I have often wondered why people consider Kessler all that special a victory. And hopkins ran out of gas and still could have been declared the victor in that fight.
