  • the seedy side of boxing

I happened to watch the movie American gangster about frank Lucas the drug dealer and then went on the net and went to a few sites comparing the truth to the movie and Lucas had a social relationship with Joe Louis even paying a 50000 dollor tax debt.
Ray Robinson visited bumpy Johnson in prison.
Ray arcel quit boxing after getting hit by a lead pipe. Are these valid accounts and do you have any more?

        .

Boxing is seedy and it always will be. In any sport where officials determine the outcome outright whenever there is no KO, corruption will find an easy breeding ground.

Boxing started out illegal, which is another relevant factor, because they learned early how to skirt, avert and pervert the law. They got lots of practice.

Examples of seediness abound so prolifically that I will only choose one from the master of seediness--Doc Kearns.

When Archie Moore deserved a title shot and could not get one because he was black and too good, Kearns though up a deal for Maxim. Give Archie a title shot, and if he wins, take 10% of his purses for life.

Some might say that was only good business and Kearns was watching out for his charge. I call call it corrupt and seedy. I know who Kearns watched out for. He was the one who drove Dempsey out of boxing and to Hollywood to escape the clutches of his contract. Kearns was the kind of man who makes you hope there is a hell.

Did not braddocks manager get a certain percentage of Louis purses to get the shot at the title when scheming was really in line via his victory over joe?

No Schmeling was out of the picture by then. Braddock waited 2 years before defending the title. He and his manager cut a deal to gain a percentage of the rest of Louis's fights to give louis the shot.
I was told Braddock lifted the percentage after Louis had to fight past his prime to cover taxes. Don't know how legit that is but that was the word I heard years ago.

seedy? Not sure about that...............could be.......shady comes to mind!

I believe the arrangement was supposedly for Braddock to get 10% of Joe's purses for the rest of his career.

what I admire about Jim is that with that deal and joes dominance he could given away his championship but fought to win

They probably paid off Richard Steele and made sure he reffed as many Chavez fights as possible, probably why he stopped the Taylor fight haha.

I took a look back through Braddocks bio and Schmeling had actually fought his way into contention but he got squeezed because they couldn't get a deal with Schmeling like Louis had to take.
I forgot that Schmeling had stayed very active after the Louis win and won four or five bouts so he deserved the bout with Braddock.
Well he got Louis shortly there after!
