  • Past Favorite and Unfavorite Referees

I didn't like Richard Steele's refereeing at all. I found it annoying how he always insinuated himself into the action, barking excessive commands. He was way too involved and broke clinches too fast. Chavez/Taylor was the capper, and a contender for all time bad decision by a ref in an important fight. Has there been a ref yet who said, yeah, I really messed that up, didn't I?

On the positive side, I thought Mills Lane was great. I always like the fact that he was refereeing a fight. He wanted to stop Tyson/Holyfield II after the first bite, but the Nevada commission overruled the judgement with their own poor judgement.

There are plenty more. Dish up your own.

The first two names that I think of for least favorite are Richard Steele and Joe Cortez.

Truly horrendous, it was pretty much matched by that perennial incompetent Laurence Cole in the Lomachenko-Salido fight.

I hate Smoger for three reasons:
1: He will let fighters get battered to a pulp for no good reason
2: He clearly has favourites, he has some kind of bromance with B-Hop
3: Sure he lets guys fight on the inside but that often means he lets guys just hold and hit and if one guy wants to just hold he takes an age to break them and thus allows for really messy and dull fights, eg Maidana-Alexander.

Ironic but Cortez was once a competent and consistent referee. He went from that to one of the worst. I think Richard Steele was alright once but lost control on when to stop a fight. Not at all happy with Kenny Bayless and would not like to see him in a major fight again. Off the top of my head, my all time favorites are Steve Smoger, Mills Lane, Carlos Padilla and Frank Cappachino.

No mention yet of Tony Weeks. Is that the name? He did everything but put Chico's mouthpiece back in for him when he should have been stopping the fight against Castillo. Chico was legitimately KO'd there, but it goes down in the record books otherwise. Amazing what a few extra seconds of recovery can do, isn't it?

I don't believe a fight should be stopped because a guy falls down while trying to get up and then trys again and beats the count. That is not a sufficient criterion in itself, but most refs will stop a fight immediately. I don't believe the fighter should have to stand in one place, obey a bunch of commands, step forward, say if he is all right. He is on his feet, isn't he? Why don't you bring in a blackboard so he can write his name? Just spin him around like Patterson and send him back out.

Then you have Mercer almost killing Morrison before the ref jumped in. I think it was one already mentioned. Maybe Cortez.

And how many times did Padilla need to remove Ali's glove from Frazier's neck before he deducted a point? Answer: Unknown, because he never did.

Is that the guy from Texas whose day job is insuring boxers? He would not have any ulterior concerns, would he? He owns an insurance agency with his daddy, if this is the right guy, and they specialize in insurance for boxers.

I want a good, clean fight. And don't hurt each other, now, or your rates could go up. Only in boxing.
