  • Prime Liston vs Prime Martin

Liston definitely takes this. By 68-69 Sonny was basically shot. And Most people don't know he came down with the flu before the fight. In retrospect, the Martin fight wasn't so surprising.
If a very old very washed up Liston with the flu dominated Liston before that lucky shot and ended his career, I'm scared to think what a prime Liston would do. And I'm not taking anything away from Martin, a fine fighter that never got the breaks he deserved.

Leotis was a tuff fight for anyone. He was well schooled and was a sparring partner for many top fighters but never adapted the sparring partner attitude.
He sparred with Forman, Frazier and Liston and had tuff looses that hampered his earnings. The Liston fight put him in good standings but he suffered an eye injury in the fight and retired. I think he only fought for 6 years and had about
40 bouts! I know he traveled and fought top tier guys in their backyards and I always think of those types of men as being the backbone of boxing cards!

    No one took him lightly!!!
    Ray.

You just went out of your way to discredit Martin's hard fought, well deserved victory in every single way that you possibly could and then you still had the audacity to finish your post starting your sentence with "I'm not taking anything away from him". This would have been hilarious if it wasn't so disrespectful.

I am not discrediting his biggest win. Even that Liston was still a hard fight for anyone in that time. But Liston was nowhere near his best in that fight.

I usually like hypothetical match-ups, but I'm not sure a single person would go with Martin over Liston when both are prime.

            -Liston shot
            -Liston old
            -Liston had the flu
-Liston lost because of a lucky punch

And yet you're not discrediting Martin. LOL.

It just rubs me the wrong way because Martin fought so hard to win this fight, he was knocked down and still came back to KO an ATG HW(yeah yeah, Liston was on the decline) and it cost him his career. His interview post fight was showed such a humble, soft spoken nice guy too, it's sad that he got injured.

It's safe to say that Martin probably wouldn't have pulled that off against a prime, in shape Liston, though. Liston would've finished him off when he knocked him down. Martin struggled enough with the old Liston, doubt he'd take the prime one.

When did I say Liston lost because of that punch? I said he was winning until he got caught by it.
Also do you dispute any of those 4 points I stated?

So are we next getting a thread called Prime Ali vs Prime Berbick? It would be equally lame.

totally agree with you man, I don't think it's disrespectful, I just think if Liston was primed, he'd stop Martin
