I thought so too!! But, even though Ben has been a great help, I do need four more people who can answer these questions, can you guys please help me spread the word? It would mean a lot to me and my project. Thank you!!

You made the exact same thread twice, two months apart so I merged them together.

I'm doing a project about "the Fight of the Year" in 1974. including Muhammad Ali and George Foreman and I really need some people who have some experience with that fight, preferably someone who was around at that time and remembers it kinda well. If you do belong in this category, would you like to answer these questions below, please?

Who would you have wanted to win this fight and why?
What kind of meaning did this fight have for you?
Did this fight change your image on the two boxers?
Were you suprised when Muhammad Ali won?
What went through you when he did?
What is your opinion on George Foreman's depression after the fight? (optional)

        1) My family, being a progressive white middle class family living in East harlem...With my mom carrying me on her back to Anti war protests was staunchly in the Ali camp. Ali could do no wrong, he was beautiful, silver tongued and courageous.

        2) Ali was the antiestablishment guy....the n1jjer who was a smart ass and would not shut up....and I say that to give you an idea of the sentiment the bastards that went for sports writers had. Ali represented a stand against the war and the military industrial complex. Cosel, unfortunately got a bumb rap because he stuck by Ali but was ignoxious and turned people off at times.

Foreman was, by contrast a stone cold killer. IF you are researching this you simply must find and read NORMAN MAILER'S piece on Foreman written for Playboy. Foreman was not nice, and had a presence that is best described by the late great Richard Pryer who said of Foreman walking into the ring..."Which one is da referee, good cause im gonna kill the other mootha****a." Truth be told believe it or not even today's George, behind the scenes can be a real ball breaker. Jim Rome described how George would glare at him during commercial breaks and as the camera panned back start smiling and becoming mr congeniality. George had and still has a real mean streak... Much more than Tyson imo.

        3) Nope. Ali was the black superman and last I checked George was not made of kryptonite!

        4) See above.

5)In my hood Ali was king. Don't mean to belabor a point but we were already getting wide eyes nineteen year olds who were even crazier than the thugs! We saw the value of Ali, the rebel.

        6) Foreman was a bully and he got punched in the nose, thats life aint it? George didn't descend into murder, drug addiction, etc. There was once a Samurai yung un who thought he was the man and challenged an older Samurai. He was told not to draw his weapon and proceeded to do so anyway whereupon the older Samurai, sliced his right hand off.

Thing is? a Samurai can draw with the left if they lose an arm but it is a stigma...Yung on was marked for life, had to learn a few things over, but lived to fight another day, when he would surely have not extended that opportunity to his opponent...and so it was with George...he could still box but he was made to soul search and fight smart, he bore the stigma of Ali boom bya!

Who would you have wanted to win this fight and why?
I was for Ali because he had been forked over by the establishment.

What kind of meaning did this fight have for you?
I watched the fight closed circuit live in a theater. The place was loud, and I was one of the loudest idiots there.

Did this fight change your image on the two boxers?
Sure, no one knew Ali was quite that tough and resourceful. That was the fight that put his legacy into orbit.

Were you suprised when Muhammad Ali won?
                      Does a bear have fur?

What went through you when he did?
                      Four pounds of feces.

What is your opinion on George Foreman's depression after the fight?
It was thorough and real. He was slapped down like a tow-headed stepchild before the most massive audience in history. Haunted by those images, he came uncoiled, fought five scrubs on the same day before a national television audience. In that period he was almost kayoed by Ron Lyle and was slapped senseless by the great Jimmy Young. He rates Lyle as a temendous puncher on the level of Cooney and Cleveland Williams.
