I don't have a scorecard, but when I watched it live I thought Lennox won by a point. Lewis was too confident in his power to bail him out and became a better fighter afterwards.

Haven't watched it in a few years at least, but watched it live and several times over the years..

Thought Lewis won, it was close, and IRCC it was a 10 rd fight and I think I had it 96-94 Lewis but it really could go either way or a draw.. Really good fight between contrasting styles

I wonder how ray's career would have been like had that version of mercer showed up for all his fights.. He would give us great performances and then lay eggs vs fergueson, Holmes, etc.
Had mercer been more consistent, I think he would be a hall of famer or at least in a debate for it

Mercer's very best performance and one of Lewis's biggest struggles. I think LEwis won, but only just, it was close.

I have to agree. I also think that its somewhat in the rules of fair play if a champ gets the benefit of the doubt in a close one....ONE. Not two or three and Mercer was a sort of waterloo for Lewis. Lewis did say, and i tend to believe this, that he did not train properly for Mercer.

I agree. I didn't score it either but I thought lewis won by a point or two. I was impressed with his durability in this fight. he obviously respected mercer coming in so it helped him absorb the shots better than he did against rahman and mcall

I don't agree that he didn't train properly for mercer. I remember coming into the fight that lewis stated he respected mercer and saw him as a threat. that's what enabled him to absorb punishment that he couldn't absorb in guys like mcall and rahman that he obviously didn't respect. mercer just happened to be on top of his game this night and he almost pulled it off

This was a great fight. I didn't score it round by round. The impression I got was it could very easily have gone either way.

I thought the decision could have gone either way but at the time I guess I wanted Lewis to win. Interesting but in previous fights Mercer was a strong puncher and not too much else. Sometime around this time period he developed a strong jab and this was a surprise to many fans. It was probably as much of a surprise to Lewis as well.
