That's very sad news. He contributed a lot to the sport we all love and maybe it took a bit too much in return. My condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends.

I loved to watch him in the ring. Great champion! R.I.P.
Aside from his great battles in the ring, he continued a battle after his boxing career. He was a spokesman for the last few years, helping the homeless.

One of my very favorite fighters during my lifetime. Anyone who thought Gatti was the ultimate in excitement should watch some MSM fights. Just as thrilling with a higher level of talent. He should have been a multi-millionaire.

he was a fighter you had to respect inside and outside the ring, did so much for boxing as well. a true champion in every sense of the word.

I worked with Mathew twice back in the day. I never charged him a thing and he would always leave a few dollars hidden in my desk or taped to a mirror for me to be able to get something for the kids in the gym. He knew my efforts were with my amateur team and especially the Junior Olympics.
If the current boxing champions had his humility and fierceness and competitive nature our sport would be heralded as it was years ago.
No mainstream sports news editor wants to listen to Mayweather or Broner or any other so-called "thug" who can't speak to a woman reporter without uttering the word "man" every five seconds! Enough rant!
If you read about Mathews life you will be amazed and praise him for his inner soul to survive. We worked hard and busted it but at the end of the sessions
talked about the work done and how it correlated to his next opponent.
I know one was for Conteh who was a problem for Mathew because the guy could move pretty well. I know I sent him back to his people in great shape from real good spar sessions.
The other bout I think was with Yaqui and that was a concerning bout for me!
Yaqui was a highly respected man who demanded anyones respect for his honor and courage! It was a tuff fight for Mathew and the work he got from me using heavyweight Ken Schmidt (200lbs) southpaw made Mathew very aware and got him sharp. Kenny hit very hard and they has some spirited sessions along with Whimpy Halstead and a few other boys I had. I think I brought in Ty Booze from Hartford too.
We loved Mathew and we were happy to help him and he took his hard work into those bouts and was successful.
Sorry for the rant but a guy like that is missed, he didn't have that outward personality to sparkle on espn but he was a genuine man and that's what's missing today.
Sorry again Ray nite

Tis saad Muhammad has left the ring his robe
cut from cloth with sweat and blood the fibers
Sewed very large....few could wear it and those who
would and could, we call Philly fighters
Only small bits of cloth remain
not many can fit this robe!
