  • I noticed one of the posters recently suggesting that this fight was a fix. But this poster has a bad habit of pulling shlt from his ass and claiming that it's fact, when he only posts on emotion, will say just about anything to fit his agenda, and when you call him out on his lies, he runs away.

Doesn't make sense that this fight would be a fix. Especially when you figure in that apparently Liston used a substance to blind Ali. Did he want to win at the time of blinding Ali, but the order for the fix came between rounds?

    Makes no sense.

      - -No proof Liston used anything on Ali. At the time body linements were in use.

Smelling salts had been banned when Cooper knocked Clay for a loop. We have Angelo on tape using them to bring him around.

Why do U frequent the history forum when U are so unstudied, the proverbial hot mess in the punchbowl?

      No pride in U being?

Also no proof of a fix, was there.

There was proof of a bum shoulder, doe.

And what does Clay Cooper have to do with Clay Liston? How do you even find your way to the history section when you have the attention span of a goldfish?

          - -Old guys carry bum shoulders. Boxing docs generally the last docs anyone would seek medical help from.

If U think Liston as a mob fighter quits on his stool without an order, well U already the dummy punching bag of the forum.

Well then it's a good thing that the boxing docs weren't the last to look into this.

Since, you know...the State Attorney had other doctors look into it.

Florida State Attorney Richard Gerstein initiated an investigation of the fight to focus on Liston’s shoulder injury, for which he enlisted the services of his office’s medical/legal adviser and the Dade County Medical Examiner. A Florida state law provided for a prison term of up to ten years for anyone found to have fixed or thrown a boxing match.

The boxing commission in Sonny’s home state of Colorado suspended him immediately after the bout. “I’m not gonna look at any medical examination and let that guide me wrongly on account of his being injured,” said one commission member. Some people suggested that Sonny should be barred from the ring for life.

Four weeks after the bout, the results of Gerstein’s investigation confirmed the findings of the eight doctors who had examined Sonny after the fight. “While Liston’s injury is beyond doubt, there is also little doubt that he went into this fight with a sore or lame arm,” stated the report. It also noted that none of the pre-fight information was imparted to the Miami Beach Boxing Commission. That means the commission chose not to mention the fact that they had turned down Sonny’s request for an injury-related postponement. The investigation revealed no evidence that the fight had been fixed, and Gerstein’s office found no fluctuation in the betting odds anywhere in the country.

And permanently swollen as well, huh?

Liston claims he tore it in the first round. Are you saying it was torn even in the Patterson fight? Any proof of that?

                Crawl away, dumbo.

I am with you on this one:

                  From BoxRec:

Machen later said he believed that Liston's handlers made deliberate use of illegal medication in an attempt to temporarily blind him during the fight. He theorized that Liston's handlers rubbed medication on their fighter's shoulders, which was transferred to Machen's forehead during clinches and dripped into his eyes. "I thought my eyes would burn out of my head, and Liston seemed to know it would happen," Machen said. When Liston fought Muhammad Ali—then Cassius Clay—in 1964, Ali returned to his corner after the fourth round and complained that there was something burning in his eyes and he could not see. "The same thing happened to me when I fought Liston in 1960," Machen said two days after Ali upset Liston. "Clay did the worst thing when he started screaming and let Liston know it had worked," Machen added. "Clay panicked. I didn't do that. I'm more of a seasoned pro, and I hid it from Liston."

I also remember reading this blurb somewhere. Possibly also from boxrec.

Queenie was saying the use of liniments was common, but how many times have we heard of boxers being temporarily blinded? Something was definitely odd. Taking that into account and with how much they scrutinized the shoulder injury, I think no way this fight was a fix.

Actually it is kind of frightening how often you can run into old newspaper articles talking of blinded fighters or at least accusations of attempted blinding.
