I have noticed this. I always thought it was cultural....But that was just a half assed guess on my part.

Must be cultural. I'm curious to know why.

De La Hoya often avoided eye contact as well.

Well....I can venture a guess. You are in a situation and you are going to try to hurt the guy across from you....Do you...smile and take it as an Irishman? like this will be a fun scrap ye haw!

do you....feel somewhat ashamed....like you will be employing a part of yourself, human nature that is best left in check?

My point is simply that there are many attitudes about violence. As a kid growing up if a guy wouldn't look at you walking by, you best be looking out because he was probably up to something. Cuban's may feel it is shifty to employ violence.

          Its a guess!

This topic reminded me of something Ali once said. He admitted that looking into the eyes of another boxer always made him uneasy, so what he would do is concentrate on a spot in between their eyes so they couldn't tell he was uncomfortable. I always thought that was a pretty smart way to get that "1000 yard stare" of looking through a person.
