Interesting topic... I might expand upon this later, but for now, I'd say I place a high premium on power. If I'm stuck with whom to rank higher between, say, 2 guys, I check their KO% and use it as a tie-breaker.

I remember bringing this up a few years ago. ATG is used a lot here but often does not mean the same thing to any two people. It can be vague without exact definition.

That can be misleading though,, hearns might have more power than holyfield but then you have to factor chins, plus opponents they ko'd, etc

And this isnt really how to rank guys, but how to determine if a guy is ATG or not,, what is the criteria in your mind that determines if a guy is ATG, not where to rank a guy that you have already declared an ATG,

            Complete package..........Sugar Ray Robinson

Power over comes everyone..........Big George Foreman

            Experience transforms to Knowledge.....Archie Moore

Boxing turns into an Art Form..............Willie Pep

Unorthodox with limited boxing abilities........Rocky Marciano

            Incredible athletic abilities............Muhammed Ali

The Willingness to Over come all Odds...........Jack Johnson...theres a few more!

Theres no one thing that defines an ATG but the above attributes defines those fellows to me. Technical soundness is a big thing because that covers offense and defense. Sometimes one side is more dominate than another. I think Robinson is superior to everyone because his entire game was on a higher level then and today! Experience that gets translated to knowledge is a fantastic advantage and hand with foot speed is a rare combo, when extreme power is used any short comings aren't as prevelant!
The bottom line is the mental strength and the refussal to loose, the will to win at any cost is a fighters heart!!! Its actually easy to see when he fights, at some point early in the bout he will start to take over and the opponents will lessens. Then if he turns it up another notch and the opponent becomes a surviver but isn't allowd to finish then ATGness has just been seen.
Granted you will fight other ATG and it will be tuffer to recognize who's dominationg but thats when your watching two greats and that alone is exciting boxing!
I don't see anyone today who demonstrates ATG attributes, a few decades ago we had Hagler, Leonard, Arguello, Duran and a few others who everyone looked forward to see. Now............other than Pacman, and he's at the end theres no one who captures the real excitment!! Ofcourse the newer generation of fans have their support to their favorites but they have no knowledge of the past greats. To compare Floyd to Robinson is ridiculous, to compare Wlad to an Ali is almost sinfull hahaha!!
ATG's now come by generation not boxing evaluation!!!
Today everyones a champion and the weight classes are a few pounds away from one another.
Its getting to be like new cars, they all look the same! Ray Corso

Resume is what defines an ATG.. Then it's all about the numbers and percentages that are crammed within that resume..
                Many things to tic:-

                Prime/unbeaten fighters, faced and beaten
Fighters who won the most in the deepest pools
                Undisputed champions in busy eras
                Weight divisions succeeded in
                Longevity
                Courage
                Talent
                Desire
