Why the silence during Chavez-Taylor 1?

I rewatched this amazing fight and several seconds near the end the commentators were just completely silenced during this moment.

Jim and Larry didn't even speak untill Steele stopped the fight. Now why was this? Were they really pulling for Taylor? Was this moment just that amazing that even they couldn't even speak for a moment?

That brings me to another question, has this happened any other times in boxing? It's just so interesting and amazing to watch such an adrenaline inducing moment with no commentary and hearing the incredible reaction of the crowd.

Did Richard Steele right to stop the fight?
No, Taylor deserved that victory.
Or, based on the medical examinations of Taylor afterwards?
Yes, he did.

I thought it was a horrible stoppage and that Taylor was robbed of his biggest win. I also lost money because of it. But if I'm being honest, the HBO commentary was very biased toward Meldrick the entire fight.

I can discuss this with myself without coming up with a good answer.
At the time, me too thought it was a horrible stoppage. Later, I wasn't so sure anymore.
HBO's Legendary Nights (on youtube) of this fight is brilliant TV.

the tolerance a fighter can build against pain/injury is truely amazing compared to any other sports.

there are times in the ring that a fighter won't even consciously recognize that he is actually in the middle of a heated bout, only fine tuned training and general instincts keeps him fighting on.

chavez/taylor was more than just a resonable stoppage, it was well warranted.

yes, had the bout continued most likely taylor could have survived the last few seconds to gain his victory. or chavez might have pounded home the last blow , sending taylor to the canvas, hospital or morge.

steele made a great call in the stoppage. taylor had withstood a tremendous beating through the rounds that he was banking away with his fast and clever fists.

the only thing that is clear: steele made sure that taylors night ended with a rather serious stay in the hospital instead of a freezer.

Silence is often the case as controversy unfolds, and very few endings were more controversial than this..
It's been debated over and over again on this section, and there's always a lot of divided opinions..
Took me more than 10yrs to finally decide, it was a good stoppage...

Very close fight Chavez bombs made up for Taylor's activity so I never really see how people had Taylor that far ahead but as for the stoppage idk I've seen the fight about 3 times and the stoppage about a million times. it was a good stoppage at the wrong time I guess would be how I look at it. Also people seem to forget Taylor's some what at fault for it happening he didn't respond he just stood there. We can all say well there was only 2 or 3 seconds left but nobody knows how hurt he was on the inside and who knows if Chavez could've landed another punch that could've really hurt him and possibly ended his career much sooner or his life. People need to think about that instead of always just saying it was almost over and that Taylor got robbed or cheated and even tho Taylor's not in good shape today it could be worse he could have ended up like the gman and if that would have happened we'd all be asking how come he didn't stop it.

It's a sad story and ****ty situation but a good thing to do.

Disagree, bad stoppage IMO and like Scott said, no time to throw more punches as Chavez was never directed toward a neutral corner.
