  • The Greatest Non-ATG

If we would do a list of Non-ATG instead of ATG, I’d rank “Professor” Peter Buckley of England as #1.

Because, even if he lost 256 of his 300 fights, he couldn’t match Reggie Strickland’s 276 losses.

So, Buckley was a loser also in the department of what boxer lost the most fights.

Though, both Buckley and Strickland deserve credit as much as the ATGs. They dared to step between the ropes (at times against pretty rough opposition), and if it weren’t for guys like them, boxing would be short of contenders.

Are you asking who the greatest fighter is like if there were 100 ATGs the guy who's ranked 101? For example.

    Real good question if so.

Straight off the top of my head but I'd probably go with someone like Tito Trinidad.

i don't really have an ATG standard.

Felix Trinidad, or Kenny Norton for heavyweights.

Not exactly, but any boxer whose name we don’t want to be forgotten.

For ex., during the 1980s I watched a HW named James Broad taking part in some brutal encounters. A tough dude, but not good enough to reach the top. And one of all those warriors who simply disappeares into the shadows.

Later I learned from wiki: In 1992 Boxing Illustrated reported that Broad intended to make a comeback and wanted to be world champion, despite the fact he was banned in Nevada and California both for failing a neurological exam and testing positive for Hepatitis. He somehow managed to get 4 more fights, losing 3 of them. By 2000 Broad was said to be homeless in Las Vegas and badly brain damaged, but when he died in 2001, aged only 43, he was back in his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Off the top of my head, I'd say maybe Arturo Gatti? Although, as a hall of famer now, he's likely not to be forgotten.

Not really sure of the criteria but I would say fighters like Bones Adams or Ayub Kalule. Excellent fighters you don't hear much about anymore.

I will get heat for saying this, but I think Chris John displayed ATG ability at times.

There are guys like Strickland that could fight a bit, they just chose a different route. If you look at Reggie's record, he got ko'd a lot...until they made a rule about mandatory suspensions after ko losses. After that, he almost always went the distance. And he fought an incredible number of times. Bet you, that, if you talked to Reggie Strickland today, he is clear headed and sharp.
