  • BARNBURNER FINALLY RE-SCORES Hagler vs Leonard

Feeling a bit ****ty. I vowed I'd never score this fight again after giving it to Hagler by one round. However I'm bored enough today and it's time to finally give myself some closure and perhaps start the grieving process after I've scored this again! SO! I've armed myself with a bottle of Sugar Free Irn Bru and some cookies therefore I'm ready to get this show on the road!

I know that there is already a thread on this fight in the section however this is a massive deal and the magnitude of this event cannot be encapsulated into a mere post in a thread about this fight. This crossroads in my life needs to be documented in its own exclusive archive.

Now, without further ado I think I've subconsciously delayed this event long enough. Lets get cracking!

Round 1: Easy round to score. Hagler fought orthodox this round which was a bit weird. As one of the commentators pointed out Hagler fights a lot better Southpaw, he seems a lot smoother and his movement less forced this way. Leonard doing a lot of moving and Hagler slowly stalking but not throwing or cutting off the ring quick enough to do anything about Leonard's movement. He wasn't even popping the jab to try and keep Leonard in one place and he must've threw less than 10 punches all told! Hagler also seemed to react wildly to feints in the early going and then simply not respond to shots that did land. He seemed very nervous and the occasion seemed to be getting to him and I thought this was further shown when he was uncharacteristically talking to Leonard. Great round by Leonard, perfect performance on a physical and mental level. He looked very relaxed and fluid and made al of the right decisions. Even snuck in a good hurting right hand and some nice body shots!
    10 - 9 Ray Leonard
    Total: 10 - 9 Ray Leonard

Round 2: This round was a bit closer but not by much! More very deliberate looking stalking from Hagler who didn't land too many punches outside of body shots in the clinch while Steele was breaking them from a clinch. Since neither fighter was doing a hellish lot with Leonard landing and then clinching from time to time and Hagler very occasionally landing something wild but not with a great deal of power, the round seemed to be SOMEWHAT open in the final 30 seconds. However Leonard absolutely controlled these last seconds and landed a lot of good solid shots to the head and body to take the round easily. Overall, Hagler seems very lackadaisical while still looking very rigid. The clinching from Leonard was a bit excessive in this round, however but he did force Hagler into a clinch after landing a hook.
    10-9 Ray Leonard
    Total: 20 - 18 Ray Leonard

Round 3: Hagler switches to southpaw in this round. I remember before feeling this round was close and I feel the same way again. Hagler heeded his corner's advice and came out moving his feet a lot faster, upping the pressure and throwing more often. He did land some good shots and seemed to be chasing Leonard down a much more effective manner this round. Hagler also got the best of some exchanges where both men were landing punches simultaneously. Towards the end of the round however Leonard landed some cute combos including a striking double hook that incorporated working the head and body. It's a case of whether Hagler's early pressure for a large early portion of the round was overcome by Leonard's nice-looking shots at the end. This may be controversial but I've said that I'm not going to score even rounds here and therefore Hagler gets the nod based on (in my opinion) controlling (albeit somewhat recklessly) the larger portion of the round.
    10 - 9 Hagler
    Total: 29 - 28 Leonard

Round 4: More of the same really but in this round I feel the commentators horribly over-rated Leonard's performance in this round. I felt Hagler the one actually landing the clean and hard shots and the one actually doing stuff! Leonard looked very nice as he manouvered his way off the ropes and out of corners but apart from a little shot here or there and a combo at the end I felt Haglers hard hooks and body shots won him this round!
    ALSO: THAT BOLO WAS LOW.
    10 - 9 Hagler
    Total: 38 - 38

Round 5: Hagler ups the pressure and puts Leonard on the ropes a few times and lands some good and clean hard shots! Leonard also did very well this round at points and actually engaged and ditched the running act while landing some good combos! However Marvin's more effective pressure and again, landing HURTING shots punctuated his victory in this round!
    10 - 9 Hagler
    Total: 48 - 47 Hagler!

Round 6: I feel Leonard got the best of this round! Both men looked very tired at the beginning and Hagler was doing well early. However towards the end Leonard began to put some steam behind his shots and even landed a great 3-4 punch combination at the end of the round. Again, it was basically the best of two tired and unspirited performances here for Leonard!
    10-9 Leonard
    Total! 57-57 DRAW

So after 6 rounds I've called it a draw. At this point, Rounds 1, 2 and 5 are the only ones I feel were decisive, meaning pretty much any score could be justified. I'm not sure if I'm terrible at scoring fights, my Hagler tinted glasses haven't fallen off, the hangover and lack of sleep is getting to me, or I am somehow enlightening the world to the fact Hagler was in with a shout in rounds 3 and 4. Time, and the posts in this thread, will tell.

Okay I had a bunch of stuff written here and then my browser died. However Hagler won round 7, 8 and 9 pretty clearly and I doubt there would be much debate with regards to that fact anyway.

      Total: 87 - 84 Hagler.

Round 10: Both fighters looking very weary after an exciting round 9. However Hagler simply out-fought and out-punched and out-hustled learning again and forced the action and landing the shots that were actually doing damage.
        10 - 9 Hagler

        Total: 97 - 93 Hagler

Round 11: Clear Leonard round. Leonard moving well but would stop and plant his feet to fire an authoratitive combination. This happened pretty regularly and Leonard was even fighting off the ropes well and besting Hagler there. Hagler looked very slow and didn't seem to have the energy to attack sensibly and was punished by the skilled, smart and rejuvenated round 11 Ray Leonard.
        10 - 9 Leonard
        Total: 106 - 103 Leonard

Round 12: There was a lot of bull**** from Ray Leonard here and the round was pretty competitive. However in amongst the nonsense Ray did some good work and landed some decent 3-4 punch combinations and made Hagler look frustrated and confused at times. Don't get me wrong though, Hagler still landed some good shots. I give this round to Sugar Ray Leonard for looking cleaner and for the instance where he was on the ropes and forced Hagler to move back.
        10 - 9 Leonard
        Total: 115 - 113 Marvin Hagler

Terrible scoring so far, but I've got a nagging feeling that worse is to come.

                    To conclude:

I feel any score from 115-113 either way is justified. There are just way too many swing rounds here. This has given me some sort of closure on the bout. It's cemented the fact that I feel Hagler was certainly unfortunate that night and with another set of judges would have kept his title. How this was in no way shape or form a robbery nor anything to cry too much about.

If I scored this tomorrow I could easily give Ray Leonard one or both of rounds 3-4. I will look at those rounds in more detail in the future as I feel those rounds are PIVOTAL to one's scoring of the bout. I feel people buy the "Hagler threw away the first four rounds" tripe way too easily and have their opinions swayed by that common phrase way too much.
