  • What do you think of Yuriorkis Gamboa?

Since there were some informed intelligent responses in the Wilder thread, I thought I'd ask here your thoughts on Cuban lightweight, who started out as a featherweight, Yuriorkis Gamboa. What do you think of him? How do you think he will do? I've seen all of his fights to date and he seems to rely more on his speed and reflexes now as he moves up to face the better competition. He seems to be working on his defense, as he held his hands down often before and had even been knocked down because of it in the past. It looked like he was looking to land quick potshots and then move out of range mostly in his last fight. So how do you think he'll do? Should he stay at lightweight or keep moving up? I think he has the ability to be a lineal or Ring title holder and possibly unify if he stays in one weight class and faces every belt holder. Do you think he could pull that off? And who are the best opponents out there for him to face at these lower weight classes?

Easily the 2nd best athlete I have seen in boxing(after Roy Jones). Unlimited potential he just needs to get fights because the long layoffs are the only thing that can stop him.

Andre Ward made a good point commentating on the Perez fight. He wondered if Gamboa even has a game plan or strategy going into fights because he tends to look like he's lost interest mid way and starts to just go through the motions.

As a fan, that really frustrates me.

He should have stayed at fw he had great power, speed and reflexes class above everyone else. His chin isn't the greatest that's for sure. To many layoffs also I thought he was becoming a star hbo blew him like no other.

His first name inhibits my thinking...

When he first started coming up in the ranks I thought he was a future p4p star and a straight wrecking machine. Lately I haven't been thinking that. Signing with 50 damn sure didn't help.

Freak athlete, but honestly too many holes in his game that would have been exploited at the elite level,,

Hands down and chin out will get you beat at the elite level,,

Gamboa does have great skills, tremendous power,, def can be a world champ,,
Bad managerial moves have stunted his career,,,

                Awesome guy to watch fight,,,

Gamboa is too small for lightweight, in my opinion. He could lose his first fight at 135. Moving further up is out of the question. That puts Yuri in a tough spot. There aren't too many possible money fights at 130. A showdown with Mikey Garcia would be nice; but with the way Gamboa's been looking, he might take his first loss in that bout.

I've seen most of Gamboa's professional fights, and have been watching him before he even went pro. I was very excited earlier in Yuri's career, but his run has taken a bad turn and his boxing future is in doubt. Gamboa was once one of the most electrifying fighters in the sport, then came the Rios fiasco and everything became a mess. Now the inactivity and move up in weight are dulling his capabilities. I'm concerned Yuri might not recover.

Agreed. It appears that Gamboa's prime may have passed.
