  • What is the Best deepest welter era from 70's to present

What do you guys think is the deepest welter era from the 70's to present day

    How would you rank them

We had the SRL, hearns era, oscar, tito era, manny floyd, curry era,,

Rank the deepest and best era of the welters over the last 40 years or so

I think it is the srl, duran hearns, benetiz era of late 70's early 80's

then would be the pernell, oscar, tito, ike, shane era of the late 90's

followed by the mid 80's of curry, starling etc...

early 70's and early 90's i think were kinda weak,,,

not sure where to put the floyd-manny era,,, it sucks that they never fought so it kinda weakens that era

I agree with your ranking. I hate it when the best of a division never fight each other. Boxing post 1980 has really suffered from this.

this is why it sucks not having universal titles.

I'll go for the Leonard, Hearns, Duran period.

Agreed. Universal titles gave the sport a lot more credibility.

Yes universal titles are the way to go,, the problem with boxing is they dont have a universal sanctioning body,,,,
MMA has UFC and UFC is the promoter and the belt "body"

In boxing you have the promoter ie top rank or golden boy, and then the belt "body" ie wba, wbc, ibf, wbo.....

There is no way to have an on going world champ, with all of these different parties involved...

In the UFC, champs always defend vs top ranked, #1 guys,,, and the fights people wanna see get made in each division,,, Outside of the superfights between champs of different divisions, those dont come off as much, i believe the last one wasw penn-GSP rematch......

If boxing had a UFC, then the fights we would be getting is,,,
              Burns-Vasquez
              Mikey Garcia- Uchiyama
              FLoyd vs Tim bradley
              Ward vs Froch 2
Serg would come off his long layoff vs GGG..... GSP and lesner were both champs and out over a year with injuries, and when they came back they had to fight the absolute best in the division,,, no tune-ups, no easy fights,,,, And the fans get rewarded for watching because they dont have to watch garbage like vasquez-diaz 2, or Wlad vs mccormick......

The era in which Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Benitez were all active at 147 is possibly the best era ever for the Welterweight division, as far as having ATGs all competing at once goes. Perhaps only bettered by the Armstrong, Ross, McLarnin, Canzoneri, Garcia era of the 1930s.

As for recent years, I like the late 90s. Oscar, Tito, Whitaker, Quartey, etc. - some fantastic fighters.
