Duran was just too slick and experienced and Barkley was just too straightforward in the fight, that only watching at half speed you can see how Duran stole the moments were Barkley was better, because he (Barkley) was doing more work. But, that's what the pro fighting is all about!

Didn't Iran beat gerrie Coetzee for some oddball group's version of the HW title?
He did, stopped him in 10 for the World Boxing Board HW Title. So he is a 4 time world champ.
If you count one alphabet title, count 'em all.

I disagree benn was a mf plus he slugged iran once or twice when he was down. so benn jumped on him cold as he should have, stick iran befor he stick u, and then if I rememvber right cracked barkly while he was down. I think he beat Coetzee in a heavyweight bout in the golden games or some kinda senior masters event or something. better stop at 3 belts

Good Fighter!
I was able to meet Barkley at a boxing event, many years ago, he is a very Super nice, friendly, open guy, he loves boxing fans & he respects the fans that liked him, he never turned down and autograph, & he would talk all you wanted about Boxing, couldnt meet a nicer guy in the sport of boxing or any sport.
He said he believed he beat Duran, did not like him, & he said he never had anything against anyone he ever fought, but wanted to hurt Duran for what he had done to his friend, Davey Moore.
My thoughts as a fighter, he was a very good puncher & as everyone has said, he was exciting to watch, & root for such a good guy, he had good solid power & could take a beating & keep coming.

Either way, amazing fighter and one of the great action fighters of all time, up there with Gatti, Chacon, Saad etc.
At his best, he was much better than a lot of people give him credit for, but man, did he have some wild up and downs through a career.
He was'nt that skilled, but whadda fighter eh.
Thought the stoppage against Benn, was a bit premature, and he worked Hearns over like a disease, which is a legacy in itself.
Great fight vs Duran.. Had it for Duran (just) but will always miss the blade..
Thanks to rightsideup for doing the thread on him. Have some green.

.....the bloke fought everyone and never really disgraced himself until he stayed on too long and basically took punishment for pay. And as a three weight world champ he deserves some proper respect.
Thought some of the comments about Benn were a tad harsh. Benn hit properly hard and at least he had the nuts and fighting spirit to really take it to a dangerous operator like Barkley.
Having said that Barkley was furious with the stoppage and did look ready, willing and able to step right back into the trenches with Benn. Would have loved that one to have gone a couple of extra rounds....

NYC (Bronx) fighter awkward to fight even though he's right there in front!
Action fighter who fights hard and had a tuff time at the end trying to pickup the pennies when it had all past by! Tuff guy but the business is tuffer!!
Ray.
