  • roger leonard what was his potential

In sugar"s book I believe he mentions that his brother could have had a good carreer . Do you think that is true?

never saw him fight so I don't know, I do know that sugar said he had good potential and could have had a great career if he hadn't lost his way. I'd imagine Ray knows what he is talking about

He boxed in the New England circuit for a while with Vito Taleretta matchmaking for him. I saw him box at the Hartford Civic Center a few times! A good boxer that had all the moves but had no power! I think Janks Morton (Rays trainer) had him at the beginning but someone else was handling him in Hartford, I think! Maybe around 1980 to 82? Ray.

And you need at least some power to really make it in the pros. All the greats at least could stop opponents at times with an accumulation of punches. Even Whitaker and Hopkins had a good amount of stoppages early in their careers. Interesting, never knew his brother had potential too. Was that the same brother interviewed in the Legendary Nights episodes about Leonard/Hearns and Leonard/Hagler?

Actually I am just reading SRL's book also. I have almost finished it with only about 15 pages left.

Roger was #2 contender for the WBA belt for Ayub Kalue in early 1981.Probably could have won the belt, but how long he could've held on to it, who knows? If he had all those drug problems that ray mentioned, might have ended worse than it did.

Roger Leonard would have had no chance against Kalule. He actually gave Ray a tough time in their fight.

only saw roger fight once. my impression was a basic jab and move fighter with decent hand and foot speed but that's all. if he was ever rated it was more on connection than anything but that's only my one fight appraisal
