He was born with heavy hands basically. Yeah he got good leverage in his shots and committed to the punches but for the most part it was just a case of being a born puncher.

Part of Rocky's philosophy was to punch threw his target but NOT to make contact fully extended! Try to get close enough to maintain the angle on your arm (in the elbow) when making contact!
Thats how power can be improved, its called technique! Ray.

He wasn't a great puncher like Shavers, Foreman, Tyson, etc... Most of his knockouts came in the later rounds when facing good opposition and a lot of them were by acumulation of punches.
He was heavy handed and had great cardio. He could throw the same amount of punches in round 15 than in round 1. He was more like a volume puncher, he put a beating on a lot of his opponents, although he had one punch knockout power too because of his heavy hands. He threw a lot of punches per round and his great chin allowed him to keep going even when the other guy was fighting back and conecting.
