I don't have a problem with people quitting when there is no way to win and they are getting their ass handed to them.

It's when they are easily winning or in a close fight that it gripes me.

For example, Dawson quitting didn't bother me but, Vitali quitting does.

Duran quiting is the worst situation for me. You'd think there was some incredible reason for it but if you followed Duran there maybe nothing to it. When he lost his backing team (Arcel & Brown) it just wasn't the same.

The second is Tyson quiting on Evander and again I doubt that happens if his team stayed intact through the years.

Boxers can be brutal and extremely tuff men but most have some vulnerabity with them and it manifests itself most often from being totally uncomfortable with their surroundings (Team)!
Its a individual affair but the team is extremely important. Ray

Liston stopping on his stool was from getting his butt kicked. He was beat up badly and this was another fight were the bully was out punched! Dundee knew if Ali could stick to the plan he could win, they sparred with Liston in Miami and Liston couldn't get to him.
The second fight in Maine was a legit punch that dropped Liston on his face after that who knows what went through his mind. He could have gotten up in my opinion but Liston was managed and under control by some serious folks!

Not having things go your way in a fight and retiring is just BS! If you misjudged your weight reduction to the point that your have lost strength and cramping occurs then your done!! You need to revaluate your choices and your advisors who set up the plan of attack for weight reduction. Ray

of course it's not shocking in the sense that McCall already had a history of not being together mentally, but the way he fought, so disheartened, and how he looked about to break down in tears, that was a kinda shocking display, surreal stuff

ALi ready to pull a no mas between rounds at the end of his trilogy with Frazier is a good one, even though Frazier was pulled out of the fight seconds before he would have retired in his corner

Just a little "knowledge" to pass along here! When your drained and fatigue is not going to be reversed your emptied inside. I believe thats what happened to this young man, and when your empty you can begin to cramp and your blood flow isn't pushing correctly from lack of good oxygen and your furthest extremedies get impared. I watched the fight and saw this young man try hard to perform but I know what I believe he was going through to be futile. I have handled a few fighters who have dehydtated during a bout and their mobility and muscle cramping leaves them vulnerable!
Not every senerio is a Rocky movie when the fighter goes out on his shield until you know what went on don't pass judgement so quickly give yourself a chance to get more info. This kid doesn't want to make excuses for his poor decision to begin with but I have a feeling theres poor decisions by everyone in his camp and family to begin with. Boxing fans need to show some heart just like we want out favorite fighters to do but when the situation is an empty tank and the stations are closed your "motor" stops! Reality is a *****! Ray.

At the time I was surprised to see Nigel Benn quit in the second fight with Steve Collins. I thought he was fighting fairly well and although behind, I'd certainly seen him fight through more torrid times in previous fights with the likes of Eubank or McClellan.

just something that people seem to forget...Liston actually did get up and keep fighting in the second fight with Ali. Walcott royally screwed the count up and decided to stop fight while Liston was up and fighting because he thought he'd been on the canvas for too long.

As I navigate through your post, it isn't clear, but you seem to imply that not having Ray Arcel and Freddy Brown in his corner that night was a factor in the outcome. Just to clarify, Duran lost them after that fight, not before.
