I believe that Durans punchers chance was pretty minimal that night. He just went 15 rounds with Leonard and other than rockin him in the second round didn't hurt him. Give Ray some props for his chin it was a pretty good one!
As for Duran being an all time big winner in with Welters from that time and from the past I don't think he'd fair that well against the all time great welters! His machismo was no greater than the men who used to fight every other week and/or once a month. Bassillo is one I think of who you could say "invented" machismo in the ring.
I do think Duran is an all time great but NOT at WW, he was a great lightweight, thats it!! Just because he won over Barclay doesn't make him an "all weight great" he did lose to Comacho, a guy who couldn't break an egg! Ray.

If Ray had turned up the heat, he probably would have been able to get him out of there. As for the ending, I think it is talked about too much. I don't blame Duran as much as I blame the people around him. They should have given him more time to prepare, instead they took the first offer they got for a rematch which forced him to lose a ton of weight in just a couple of months. The damage that fight did to his reputation was not worth the extra few million they got for giving Ray an immediate rematch. I think it's sad that a truly great fighter like him gets criticised for "No Mas" all the time, yet today you see people who go into fights and don't even try to win (Shane Mosley, David Haye) and people who quit not once but several times (Victor Ortiz). I don't know why, maybe it's the image that they portray and the way they quit in comparison, but for some reason they seem to get a pass while Duran doesn't.

I agree that Leonard was winning the 8th round at the point of the TKO.

It's just as daft as saying Ray won their first fight which you have often said in the past so don't pull that **** here Pink.

My point is it was a tough close fight that duran deserved. He brought it to leoanrd and they fought his style, but dont try to make it like he whipped leonard, as he did not, and after round four on each card, ray either won more rounds or equal.

Duran beat Leonard decisively. Regardless of what the scorecards say, he controlled the fight until the last few rounds. Would I go as far as to say that he "whipped" Leonard? Perhaps not, but it would have been a terrible decision if Leonard had won the fight.Last edited by SBleeder; 09-13-2012, 12:23 PM.

His best days were behind him at that point and he had already proven that he could beat Leonard at 147. If he had been able to win in New Orleans I might rank him one or two spots higher than I do, but his quitting does nothing to tarnish the phenomenal career he had.
The judges gave Duran the shaft in the middle and late rounds. Leonard won rounds, but the scorecards were closer than they should have been.
