I remember reading (back when he was active) about how his manager (or trainer) was an old Italian American guy who ran a tailor shop in New Jersey which was a hang out for all the old school boxers & he'd feed off their stories.

the story was that guys like Jersy joe walcott and willie pep would come in to Al certo's shop and show Mcgirt stuff. True or not? certo was around boxing a real long time himself.
For a guy that had zero physical gifts- what he has was a boxing brain and the ability to learn- McGirt did pretty good

Speaking of McGirt, there was a mention of him here in Long Island on News 12. It's a cable news channel. They were mentioning that some local Long Island or Suffolk County Hall of Fame museum will have to move because of a lack of funds and donations. They mentioned guys like McGirt and Buddy Harrelson and a few other LI pro athletes.
