Charley 'The Devil' Green
Whilst out jogging today I suddenly remember the above boxer, a light heavyweight gate keeper from the 60's & 70's. He was quite a character & there were tons of stories about him.
But the story I remembered was when he was at Madison Square Garden to watch recently deposed Light Heavyweight Champion Jose 'Chegui' Torres fight Jimmy Ralston. For some reason Ralston bailed out last minute & the promoters were in panic mode. Then the matchmaker noticed Green in the crowd & asked him if he wanted to fight.
Matchmaker "Charley, you want to fight Torres in the main event?"
Green "How much for?"
(here's where some of the details get murky).
Mm "$3,000" (Some amount)
Green "My ticket cost $15 & my hot dog $1. Make it $3,016 & you've got a deal" (some stories say he asked for the price of the of the ticket, some say hot dog, some both).
Mm "Done"
Green finishes his dog, gets changed, goes into the ring & decks Torres in the 1st & 2nd rounds before getting stopped himself.
Torres never fought again.
Green is now serving a multiple life sentence for the murder of about 5 people although many think he's innocent. Apparently he's writing an autobiography.
